Airbag Recall-Sprinters

Mercedes is recalling Sprinters
From 2015 to 2017. They will need to replace the drivers side air bag. Suggest checking with your closest Mercedes dealer for an appointment as my dealer has a two month waiting time.

Ours is a 2014 and we received a recall letter last week for the PS airbag which we had replaced three days later. We had the DS airbag replaced three months ago.

Just got our 2016 Sprinter back from the MB Dealer, today. Called them a week ago, they had to order the parts, took it in on Friday. Then they had order some other part. Can't complain as it cost me nothing.

BTW, Freightliner Sprinter dealers can also perform the recall work as they are MB factory authorized dealer.

I received notice of the driver's side recall about 2weeks ago. Called Service department at Mercedes dealer in Knoxville, was told they had to,order parts and that "parts would call me when parts were available. Odd since headquarters had notified me to call nearest dealer(?). Now how long before we repeat this dance for passenger side airbag? Knoxville dealer is over 120 miles. I have done this scenario with my VW, Passat. Why not notify us and repair both sides at the same time.

Seems to be a tactic used my many manufacturers. Had separate recalls on a couple other vehicles I own. Annoying.

In my 2014 I got a recall on my DS airbag and just last week I got the recall notice for the PS airbag. I wish they would have recalled both at the same time, you know they new the PS had the same issues as the DS. I don't know how Takata has remained in business with them having to replace virtually every airbag it has made since the 2014 time frame for Mercedes Sprinters and more years for other makes and models.

I didn't think they still were in business. They filed for Chapter 11 in 2017, and some other company bought the assets. Maybe MB is paying the new company for the replacement airbags.

Edit: Found this wiki page on them. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takata_Corporation

Dealer replaced my driver side today and ordered the passenger side -- be here in 4-5 days. Another trip to the dealer in a week.

Airbag recall

I also received my letter about the driver side airbaag recall on my 2016 Navion (2015 chassis). Letter stated that the dealer has parts in stock. What bugs me is that MB knew about this issue for some time. So for the past 3 years I've been driving a vehicle with an airbag that could blow up in my face. I'd checked the MB site and ran my VIN a few times over the past couple of years and got no notification about a recall.

Update to my previous post...
I called to schedule my appointment today. They said I could have it done in 3 days from now. I made the appointment for about 3 weeks from now and they said they would order the parts. Apparently my dealer doesn't have the parts in stock but can get them right away.

My appointment in next week. What do they have to access to change the drivers side bag? I ask as I have TPMS, 2-way radio, ScanGauge all mounted on the dash drivers side. Do they just need the steering wheel, where the airbag is located? Or do they need to dive into the dash, meaning I should remove all my extras before I go??? Thanks!

Airbag Recall-Sprinters

Had my 2016 drivers side replaced. They had part in stock. Service guy said MB was having to foot the expense as Takata went bankrupt.

Update - in case anyone else needs to know (no one answered when I asked) - drivers side airbag replacement done Monday. Took less than an hour. I did NOT have to remove any of my radios/monitors/etc. from the dash for them to do the repair.
