Have a favorite portable jump-starter?

Hi there -

I'm going to start carrying a portable jump-starter for peace-of-mind. The rig has been through 3 Texas summers now and I think the battery is fine for a couple more but seems like a good thing to have on-hand.

I'd like one that I can also use to charge our phones and other Li battery devices mostly to remind me to keep the portable charger charged. :-)

Anyone have a model they like and recommend? There are a lot to choose from, just with a general search.

I have a 2018 Sprinter 3500.

Thanks for any advice!

Mark

I would avoid any that have AGM style battery because they will be dead unless you charge it once a week. Lithium is what you want to buy.

Texas? Why not use the sun as your jump starter? Get a small solar charging rig and let the sun keep your battery up. Maybe some come with auxilliary charging capability for small appliances, I'm not sure. A small panel and charge controller might get you an amp or two of free charging when the sun shines.

After some number of years, an auto battery will not be able to turn an engine over or to be re-charged. The alternator in the vehicle keeps the battery charged as long as the battery is within its service life.

? Pardon ? If you're saying that your battery is approaching the end of it's life cycle (by inference), why not replace it, rather than spending money on something that will wear out faster than a new battery?

Do you not have a boost switch on the dash?

This is only true if you use the vehicle at least weekly maybe biweekly. Leave your vehicle at an airport and come back a month later and the battery will be dead. I bought a $20 solar maintainer from Home Depot and it works fine. I will keep the battery charged for at least a few months.

For future reference, it may be helpful when storing your motor home to either disconnect the chassis battery or keep a battery tender on it. We do the latter, in part because we don't feel like reprogramming the radio every time we come back to the rig for another round of camping. It works beautifully to keep the chassis battery happy, and likely extends its life. If we ever need a "jump," we'll press the button on the dash that others have noted.

I always carry a Schumacher SC1281. Used it mostly to jump start other campers trucks and motorhomes, and even a boat engine. Works great, and has a built-in flashlight in case you have to use it at night. Also used it, before switching to LiFePo4, on my TT deep cycle marine battery when it had discharged and I could get the slide in.

20 ft jumper cables so you can reach the chassis battery under the hood from the coach batteries.
