Sprinter Oil Change

The manual and such say to change the oil at 20,000 miles. Our coach has 10,000 miles but it will be a year old next month. We took two 3 month trips in it an otherwise it was stored indoors. Should I change the oil now or since it is a synthetic oil wait till the end of this upcoming 4 month and depending on miles change it then.

JMHO: I can't believe that there isn't a time mentioned as well as mileage .
Fresh oil never hurt an engine , particularly the first change , do it now.

First oil change - safe to go at an earlier interval. We did ours at 10,000.

I did mine at about 4800 miles since the chassis was two years old, and so was the engine oil. I had it changed last fall before parking it for the winter. Since it would take several years to rack up 10,000 miles, I'll probably have it changed every two years.

I changed my oil and fuel filter at 12,000 miles and basically 1 year. The oil change using MB spec oil and filter, was normal DIY. The Fuel filter change was done by Christopher Trucks in Greenville, SC. (Always requires a Turbo inlet seal replacement not really a DIY yet) My 20K complete service A was done by MB dealer (Centenial Imports) here in Pensacola, included oil and filter change.

Did my first oil change today at 5800 miles. Looks like mine left the factory about 18 months ago and sat on the dealers lot for about 14 months. I was getting the maintenance wrench on the dash with the days counting down. Used Mobil1 0w30 ESP (MB 229.52) that I got from Napa last spring on sale. Total cost of the oil change was about $110 including buying the filter wrench, 14 qts of oil and the filter. Reset the computer also.

Try this site, (https://www.bobistheoilguy.com). They can tell you how long conventional and synthetic oils can last while sitting in an engine, (shelf life).

Before I park the motorhome for the winter, I always have the oil and oil filter changed, the fuel filter changed, and the air filter. I don't like storing an engine with dirty oil and partially dirty fuel filter. Mileage doesn't even play into the decision process.

I believe my manual states 20k miles or annually, one of those "whichever comes 1st" things. I've been changing mine before I put it away for the winter.

recently I had my 2nd oil change, this time it was at about 15000 miles on the oil. I sent out a sample to be tested and the results showed there was some metals in the oil, as expected on a relatively young motor. The recommendation from the lab was to change the oil at 10,000 miles in the future.

We changed the oil on our new Sprinter Diesel 3.0 at about that mileage. My dealer recommended 10,000 instead of 20,000. Even at that, the oil was black as coal (not necessarily an indication that anything is wrong). I used the Mobil 1 0W-30 ESP synthetic which meets the spec. It is very pricey. Filters can be purchased at NAPA and if you are AAA members, you get 10% off. The oil can be purchased at NAPA too or on Amazon or E-Bay, probably a little cheaper. It takes about 12 to 13 quarts (check the manual), so an oil change could cost $150 or more, especially if you have it done at a shop. This past June, NAPA actually had it on sale for close to $3 off per quart (I think it is about $10 a quart), but sales on ESP mobil 1 oil are very rare.

I guess it is just the cost of owning a Mercedes.

NPA seems to have the ESP on sale a few times a year for either $5.79 or $5.99. I was $92 out the door with 14 qts of oil and the filter. (No sales tax in MT ) I did have to spend about $20 to buy the peoper filter wrench. Very simple to change as it did not even require lifting it off the ground to get under it and reach the drain plug. I changed ours at 5800 the first time based on what I said above.

Highly dependent on location as some report $400 oil changes.

Next question is the “dealer” actually using the ESP 228.51 or 229.51 oil ?
