Water sanitation 2016 33.2

Hello Everyone,

Looking for a way to sanitize the water tank on my 2016 33.2. The tank is located on the passenger side, in a narrow bay, between the drive line and the basement. I can see the in line water filter, but have not figured out how to access the tank for sanitizing. I don't drink the water....does anyone?

I generally refrain from drinking the water but will do so occasionally. You should change the water filter every year and this technique will coincide with that chore. Check out the video from theRVGeeks.

The coach manual does not give enough information to sanitize all the lines and tank. Determining the flow of water through the entire system, and in each position of the valve, is the only way to feel comfortable that everything is being sanitized.

I accomplished this by drawing a schematic of the water system by using what I was able to get from Thor and verifying the flow of water throughout. Then, I decided the best way to get everything sanitized was to use a water pump to suck solution from a bucket, through the hoses used to connect to city water, through all the lines in the coach while using the main water valve, and lastly putting the required amount of solution in the main tank before filling the tank with fresh water.

Many RVers drink the water from their tank. In my case, I installed a reverse osmosis filtration system at the kitchen sink which we use for drinking water.

Thanks for the help Jim & Mike! As I was watching the video and reading your responses, it dawned on me that I live in a climate where don't have to winterize my coach. Having said that, all I have to do is prepare the solution in a bucket, and turn my water setting to winterize and the water pump will suck the solution into the tank. I totally forgot about the winterize setting because I never use it......That's what I like about this website; I have more brain power to help me!

I do winterize mine and putting the selector valve in the winterize position bypasses the fresh water tank. I believe that it is designed this way to prevent anti freeze from entering the fresh water tank, but I have been wrong before.
When I am sanitizing the fresh water tank I remove the overflow tube from the top of the tank and use a funnel to pour the solution in from the top of the tank.

I am attaching a diagram of the Anderson valve plumbing that helped me see how best to winterize. I first blow out the lines with compressed air at about 50 psi. I use all of the positions of the Anderson valve. Then I fill the lines with antifreeze using the winterize position. On the subject of sanitizing the freshwater tank, I just use city water which has chlorine in it to partially fill the tank.

Thanks for the help Jim Walker and John! The THOR Tech said that Winterize setting would sanitize......but according to the diagram Jim posted makes perfect sense. I agree that it should bypass the tank. In the 2016 model I don't have access to the overflow tube, but I'll give it a try. Otherwise, I think I introduce the solution through the water filter like the video that Jim (Berlin Kid) posted. In theory, I'll have to sanitize both the plumbing lines up to the tank, AND the tank itself.

Pretty well everything I've read regarding sanitation makes reference mostly to DRINKING water. I'd bet that most people who don't drink their system water also don't shock-sanitize their fresh water tank.

If you are going to shock-sanitize your fresh water tank, you only need to introduce about 2 cups of household bleach to a 100 gal tank. My suggestion, for what it's worth is to pour the bleach into the garden hose that you're using to fill the tank.

We don't drink the system water so I don't shock-sanitize the fresh tank but on the first filling of the year I introduce 2 to 3 tablespoons of household bleach into the fresh tank for the water we're going to use for washing. This is not shock-sanitation of the system and it's probably not required for non-drinking water but I do it out of habit.

Thanks for all the input. With the exception of brushing teeth, we don't drink the water. I'd like to know that the tank water is good to drink if we ever needed to. The system has never been shocked, so I thought I would do it once just for my peace of mind.
