The mattress in mine was like sleeping on a cotton ball. No support at all. And the bed is so tall we both need step-stools to get in. I have thought about cutting the base down a few inches but have not really checked to see how feasible that is.

What a horrid mattress the industry uses! Its about cost! I had one dealer tell us they use a $20.00 mattress because no one makes a $10.00 one! Hello Costco.

Meh, 2 trips, 4 weeks total, no issues with the mattress, and I have a bad back.

I would highly recommend giving the mattress a chance before blowing money. You may find you want to replace it, but maybe not. I'm pretty sure there's a Costco or some other store wherever you're going camping in case it's not working out.
