Talking OH NO!!! Water leaks!!!

After spraying down our trailer after returning from 5 days in the woods, including rain, snow, and mud, I found some water on the floor inside the cubby under the bathroom linen closet. Only about 2-3 tblspoons, but it was really water!!

Instead of yelling and screaming about how poorly my trailer is built, I went looking at the exterior outside of the cubby area. Found that the electrical socket was slightly separating from the caulking. Also, the top area where the factory applies the Geoflex sealant had a void just behind the hinge for the plug cover. Removing the socket, found wet dust inside the hole at the bottom. Also, upon reinstalling after cleaning and resealing, found 2 of the 3 mounting screws stripped!! OMG, such quality control!! Just kidding, JT.

I have a 90 deg plug adapter so the cord hangs straight, which helps keep the socket from being twisted down, but still those heavy cords do put some strain on that poor socket!!

Also, when inspecting under the bath sink, found mineral crusting on the fittings feeding the faucet. They were just finger tight, maybe from our continual rough road towing, maybe from interior heating and cooling. Really pissed that that can happen!!!

Just a note to others to always keep checking your rig, esp early in the season!! Here is pic of orig problem:

Yup, because of the constant shaking and vibrations of traveling, RV's require constant vigilance for squeeks and leaks.

A good heads up for all of us! Thanks!

By the way, at the campout, please remind me to tell you about my recent connection with Tuguala, WA, while in the Hill Country of Texas!

Constant traveling and just plain bad crasftmanship using the cheapest available sealants and materials.

I had a friend ask me what trailer to buy as they are in the market. I told him if I were to do it again I would find a 5+ Year old trailer in the floor plan I want and buy that. At least all the major issues have been fixed and with the money you'd save you could have custom graphics made.

True to a point... But the reality is that constant shaking and vibration from driving down the road means that ALL rigs need constant attention... Old, new, expensive, entry level... No real difference other than perhaps the initial warranty fixes. I've had 3 RV's; a 1979 that I owned and used for 10+ years, a 1988 that we used for 14+ years, and our current rig, a 2004 that we've had for just under a year. None were purchased new, and all 3 required constant vigilance and maintenance, although my current rig has for the most part been pretty solid...so far. But when things inevitably come up, I won't be surprised; I'll simply address the issue and keep camping.

From the occasional breakdown of a component/system, to water line joints loosening up, to things sticking and needing lube, to screws needing tightening...anyone who says their RV is trouble free is, in my opinion, lying, or they haven't used it.

I'm not going to say that quality control is great in the RV industry. We all know that is not the case. But very few of us could ever afford a rig that had the quality of construction needed to survive what we put them through on a daily basis without any problems cropping up. Remember, we are continuously driving a fully self contained HOUSE down the road.

Upgraded that receptacle to one with a gasket like a boat and no worries.

Sorry, a reply here would be way "off-topic"! Besides my story is pretty dull. I will use the time between now and the Campout to come up with some embellishments.

Bob
