Outdoors RV - Air conditioner or jet engine?

Hi guys,

Love my Wind River and the super sleek, low profile air conditioner works great. I just have one problem with it. When I turn it on, you can hear my air conditioner across the entire park over everyone else. It is quite embarrassing. It isn't mechanical, it is just sounds like the fan could suck the atmosphere out of the area. Do you guys have the same experience? I've considered replacing it to ensure I'm not upsetting neighbors since it runs pretty much all day in the summer when camping.

I've also thought about rigging up some kind of muffling system, maybe an aluminum ring on top where the fan exhausts. Not sure.

Thoughts? Similar noise on yours?

Thanks,
Darren

What's the make and model number of the AC unit?...we have a 2013 Wind River...and the noise from that unit doesn't sound loud....compared to others in the campground. I don't have our make and modeling front of me.

I'll look it up and get back to you. It is a low profile unit and actually runs off of a Honda 2000 generator if I turn everything else off so I hesitate to change it out. The fan noise is just too much though. I'll see what I can find I looked it up once, my paperwork is in the trailer in storage so might take a few days.

Darren,

We have used ours very little, but it seemed "normal" when we did. We usually use the "low" speed fan setting. At least inside the rig, the noise on the "high" speed setting is much more.

On the inside it sounds normal... low is quiet, high is a bit noisier but as expected. Outside the noise stays the same when it is running. Just a really loud wooshing sound from the fan sucking the air though the fins. Ours is at least twice as loud as any other in the park. I might try to get it on video...not sure if it would really come across though.

Does yours do Heat (Heat Pump)?
I have been looking at a low profile heat pump as a replacement for our Colemen A/C/. I wonder if the heat pump is as loud?

I tested our A/C last weekend to make sure that it worked but I was inside the whole time and didn't step outside to hear it. I will be very interested the next time I try it out to see how loud it is. Of course, the temperature outside will be the determining factor in how much I care if it bothers others. The higher the temp gets, the lower my care gets! lol

No heat pump in ours.

Hm, that isn't an acceptable trade-off in my opinion. Creating angry neighbors to stay cool will just make you uncomfortable in a different way. Hm...

At least you are a "good" neighbor in the aspect that you care about making that much noise. I recall this one time one of our fellow campers was chainsawing. At 11 pm at night.

Found a guy that has some Dometic heat pumps on CL for a good price. I am curious about the noise they produce. It seems that the lower profile ones make more noise than the bigger ones like on my trailer. I might have to investigate this and make a switch.
