Truck Tires

I know this isn't actually an ORV question, but I would be interested to know what those of you with larger (3/4 or 1 ton) trucks are using for tires.

My Ram 2500 came with Firestone Transforce AT radials and at 37k miles, it looks like I will be needing tires before summer is over. I've never been a Firestone fan, but these seem to be wearing fairly well.

I'm currently looking at Michelin LTX (M/S or AT/2) and Goodyear Wrangler Silentarmor Pro Grade. If any of you have experience with these options, I'd love to hear about it.

Back when I had a smaller truck, I had great results with BF Goodrich. They were long lasting and never had an issue with traction, noise or flats.

I have used BF Goodrich Rugged Trail tires on 3 Dodge Ram trucks since 1998. Probably 7 sets, each set getting about 50,000 miles. Not one tire failure, yes a nail or two.

Put new Goodyear Wranglers A/T with Kevlar on last summer, they have the snow flake so can run them all year. Only have about 6000 miles on and I am pretty happy with them so far. Never had Goodyears before so will see how it goes. Have used B.F. Goodrich A/T for years and had very good luck with them. Couple sets went 80 or 90 thousand miles, was on 3/4 ton Chevy. Had well over 300,000 miles on that truck. Before the last set of Goodyears I was using Toyo A/T and was happy with them initially they seem to wear good but developed a tread separation before I could wear them out. Currently have another set and it feels like with this set it is happening again. Getting vibration on the highway. The Toyos were and are on my 2006 Ram 3500 work truck.

USA made Cooper Discoverer AT3 put on last year from Discount Tire Direct on Ebay and a $100.00 cash card from cooper. Very nice tires. I had BFG's that were about 6 years old with tones of tread left but they got too hard and started getting very slippery when wet. I only drive my truck about 3000-4000 miles a year so just like the trailer I am going to be replacing all these tires every 5 years. After selling my BFG's on CL and all the discounts I was only out of pocket $250.00 including mounting and balancing. Gotta love CL!

BF Goodrich AT are a great tire for all kinds of situations. I get good mileage out of them, they are snowflake rated so no chains. Work fairly well in mud but are not a noisy mud tire, work great on forest service roads. If you never run off of pavement or in snow then you may want to look at a more highway only style of tire. Not sure if your truck is 4x4 or not.

Interesting. Lots of good comments on BFG, which I hadn't considered. I'm also interested in the comment on Cooper tires being US made, as I seem to be thinking about that more and more lately. Cooper is the one I probably know the least about, although I know they have been around for a long time.

Do you want a highway, an all-terrain, or a mud tire?

I want All-Terrains that run well and quiet on the highway. But am avoiding those with the snowflake as those usually don't last as long on the highway, have no treadwear warranty, and we're snowbirds. That pretty much excludes BFG AT T/A KO2s which are otherwise a good tire by all accounts.

Currently Cooper AT3 and Toyo AT2 are at the top of my list.
They both have tread wear warranty of 50-55K miles.
But there are many others that are similar AT type tires with similar warranties:
Nitto terra Grappler G2
Michelin AT/2
Goodyear Wrangler AT Adventure Kevlar
Yokohama Geolander AT-S

At this point, price will probably be the major determinant as I don't really think there's that much diff between all of them.

I have ran BFG all terrain tires on my f250 since new. Replaced the first set at 70,000 miles. Now at 115,000 and the second set look like they will easily go to 70,000 before replacement. Great tires imo.

Virtually all of my driving is on the highway or at least on nicely graveled roads. I'm looking for something quiet, good handling, long wearing, and most importantly, capable of safely moving my 4 ton truck and 12k trailer down the road. Decent ability in the snow is also a plus, but not to the point where I'm looking for M&S tires. My current Firestone Transforce tires are pretty bad in the snow, but since I have 4wd I get by.

That's pretty amazing! What model BFG are you running? Handle well? Quiet?

All terrain ko. Baja champion. LT 305x70r16. Surprisedly quite for a large tire. Handling is great don't notice any difference when 5er towing.

On my 1-ton Diesels I've used...

Michelin LTX M/S - great treadlife (70k), good highway mileage, terrible loose gravel traction.

Toyo Open Country A/T II - good loose gravel traction, good highway mileage, terrible treadlife (~35k)

Toyo Open Country M/T - great traction all around, terrible highway mileage, terrible treadlife (~35k)

Nexen Roadian HTX - descent loose gravel traction, descent highway mileage, looking to be terrible treadlife too. (18k and over half gone)

I too am eyeballing the Goodyear kevlars, but finding good Goodyear tire service in the Northwest region is difficult at best.

I also probably drive with a heavier foot than others.
