The batteries in my 5th wheel are in boxes which have vent lines on top cover and DRAIN HOLES in bottom

The batteries in my truck sit on a battery tray that has DRAIN HOLES in it.

The battery in my motorcycles all have had DRAIN HOLES in the boxes.

I've never liked those battery boxes because they fill with water but for $7 they do a good job of protecting the battery keeping the battery isolated and stopping anything from falling across the terminals.

For years I've been drilling a 1/4" hole in of each of the depressions at the bottom......the battery in the truck isn't in a sealed box.

I think I will drill some holes about half way up the sides so that if I have a leaky battery it will catch some of the electrolyte, but drain if water somehow gets in there and fills it that much.

1.) What keeps the water from running into the holes you drill half way down
2.) The battery may not freeze but the water around the battery will
3.) If there is any liquid in the box each time you'll be wondering like I use to ....is that H2O or H2SO4.

1. Nothing.
2. Too small an amount of water to damage anything.
3. Drop a little baking soda in the liquid and I'll know immediately if it's electrolyte or water.

Good questions, though. I appreciate the opportunity to consider things I haven't.

You could also put a small plastic bag with some small perforations, with a few tablespoons of baking soda in each box as a preventative. Did this in my boat due to water sometimes getting in boxes due to too many cables not allowing the covers to seat fully. Drilled holes to allow drainage to the bilge and mixed the baking soda at the same time so that bilge pump wasn't affected.
