The GV unit isn't that heavy and when we were doing them in my shop it was about $600. CDN for the install and I think $150.00 for the driveshaft to be shortened and rebalanced plus the GV unit. That was 10 years ago too. Any decent shop shop be able to do without any issues.

One other point to ponder on is the fact that the 542 transmission does not have a lockup torque converter where as the Allison 1000 does.

Tranny
Thanx for that observation! I had forgotten that. Does a non-lockup converter actually waste energy? Seems like it must. Any idea how much?

They will generate more heat, lower gas mileage and will not provide the same amount of engine braking due to torque converter slippage. So yes, due to the characteristics of the non lockup torque, they are not as efficient. I don't know what the percentage in loss would be. All this being said, the 542 is still a reliable transmission. A rebuilt Allison 1000 runs about $3500, computer around $500. If I remember correctly, the recommended H.P. and torque input figures are 235 hp and 510 to 605 foot pounds. The 1000 is a very good transmission which is capable of being modified to take some fairly high input power.
I hope this helps

Hello and welcome, here is a link to the HWH site which has a lot of info on trouble shooting as well as many other things. If all else fails there is a member on here (azpete) who works for HWH and has been very helpful to anyone who has problems.

1998 Rexhall Aerbus here
Got my Rex on December 29, 2020. Been updating and fixing ever since. Almost ready to hit the road and try not to look back. 1998 Rexhall Aerbus XL-3300S (Widebody) with 32K original miles. So far, I took out the onboard generator and installed solar (4x100W solar panels, 4xDuracell RV & Solar AGM batteries, 3500W Pure Sine Wave inverter, and enough wire to wrap around the rig 4 times) hahahaha. I decided to get a 3500 portable inverter generator for backup. Now my rig is almost ready to travel and camp boondock style or in camp grounds if needed. I’m loving my Rexhall and I hope my fellow Rexhall fans do too! Much love to you all and Happy Trails!
