Generator Blowing fuel pump fuse

The generator in our 1994 Rexair is blowing the fuel pump fuse when we start it up.



Pump has been tested (it's new anyway) and the generator starts up and runs without the fuel pump, so both are working independently, but when combined, we have a blown fuse



Has anyone got any ideas on what could be causing this as I am without the use of my microwave/oven amongst other things, without the generator. We can't of course, plug into power here as it's 240v.



BTW - we are in NZ - lots of American RV's out here now, but parts can be an issue, as are our narrower roads. We belong to an American RV club here.



Any suggestions gratefully received.

If you're positive the pump is fine than it's probably wiring and you could just wire the pump through a switch or even a 12 volts coming from the control board. If you use a switch than you would have to turn it on when the gen is on.

OKCNEWBIE Thank you so much for the suggestion. It worked and we have a generator again, albeit temporarily. It still blows a fuse on starting, so we're loaded up with spare fuses!



Been advised it's probably the generator solenoid, so next step is to get that looked at, but I'm most grateful for the suggestion.

Howdy from Texas.. Old thread and am hoping you got the problem resolved but you might check the fuel pump prime switch located just below the manual start / off switch located on the front of the generator (provided of course that it is a GENERAC). It's a rather cheapo switch and if shorted could be the source of your blown fuzes..

Greetings from New Zealand and thank you so much for taking the time to post to my old thread.


The generator was sending 74v to the fuel pump instead of 12v, so of course blowing the fuses. It's something inside the generator malfunctioning, but no-one seems to know what.



In the end hubby bypassed the generator and connected the fuel pump (brand new), directly to the house batteries. It does mean he has to manually start the generator, but it's so good to have it and the microwave working again, who cares?


It's winter here now and the heater has decided not to fire up. It's a gas fired one - the original, I think. All sent to test us!

Is the start switch momentary ?

If its not, and stays in the start position, that could cause some backfeed from the generator to the engine start circuit.

Is gas/propane on. If you have other propane appliances (stove or water heater) do they work as they should?


If so:


How far into the "heat" cycle does it get:


You can hear the ignitor clicking?


You can feel the gas valve opening (same time as ignitor)?


Flame start?


Flame goes out?
