Campgrounds

Looking to make a trip from Atlanta Ga to Mt Rushmore SD. My question is has anyone made a long trip and not made campground reservations ahead of travel time, but simply made the trip on the fly. Before Covid and a lot of new RV people purchased, we traveled and when we needed a place to camp we called on the road early afternoon and found a camping spot. Would the group suggest we make reservations before we leave for the trip or just hope we can find a spot for the night. We plan on leaving August 5 or 6 this year. We will boomdock until Souix City Sd. then travel on to the Mt Rushmore area. Maybe Yellestone will be open in early August 2022.

That is how we travel. The trick is to call Mom and Pop campgrounds, city and county are good also. We would stay in our Friday campground for Fri and Sat so we weren't involved with weekenders. These usually are basic, no pool, playground etc.

You will arrive at Mount Rushmore in the middle of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and Yellowstone is always sold out. But you can sure try to find a spot without reservations. Personally, I prefer a Powerball ticket as my test to determine if I am walking around lucky and don’t know it.

Plan B:https://freecampsites.net/#!Rapid+Ci...+United+States

My plan A is to make reservations at federal, state, or city parks a day or two before I arrive but having an idea of where I can camp without reservations.

Souix City is in Iowa, Souix Falls is in SD. There is a casino on I-29 near Souix City good for an overnight stay. I've driven past it but never stayed. There are also a couple of rest stops on I-29 between Omaha and Souix City. I-90 between Souix Falls and Rapid city also has a couple of rest stops. Badlands National Park near the city of Wall may be worth checking too. Wall Drug i believe has overnight RV parking too, not sure. Any campgrounds around Mt Rushmore the last week of July and the first week of Aug are usually booked in advance due to the Sturgis Rally. You may get lucky and find a cancelation.
