New RV'r Headed for Route 66

My wife and I are recently retired and bought a 5th Wheel with specific plan to travel Route 66 from Chicago and back (starting home in Maine). Planned to leave in April 2020 but Covid smashed that plan. Now planning April 2021. Decided to try RV Trip Wizard. Does anyone know if you can specify a route number for all or part of a trip?

Search for books on this subject. Many available. Most of 66 is gone. Under I-55, I-44, I-40.
ALBQ has some nice historical spots.

Route-specific routing

I have never been able to tell RVTW to follow a specific route (like 66).

However, if you gather specific places from your other research, you can enter any campgrounds you identify along 66 as well as other destinations (as custom stops).

Once you have those listed, you an zoom in and use the drag feature to get as much travel on actual 66 as you can. But there is not much of the old road left. At times, you can see the original pavement off to the side of the road that you are driving on. At other times, you are on the service drive for the freeway. Still, other times, you are in some quaint towns. Many towns make it abundantly clear that you are on old Route 66 with signage, murals, and museums.

Enjoy the ride!

Tucumcari N.M. is an excellent stop, there is several rv parks there. You can get maps from the local chamber of commerce of all the murals in town, 30+ total. Tourism from route 66 is barely keeping some of these towns alive along the route. But if you get a chance to do a guest sign in book anywhere, look at where all the people are from. Europeans love Route 66. Enjoy!

Have started to plan trip as you suggest. AAA has a rt 66 specific paper map and Trip Tic's to go with it. I will likely use that for rt 66 travel where it is still useable with 5th wheel.

Route 66

So we’re you able to do the Route 66 trip, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
It’s on the wife’s bucket list, and I need to get to it.

The July 10 edition of the “RV atlas podcast“ talks about Route 66 with road trippers. Also, I listen to a podcast, and unfortunately I can’t recall which one… And the guest speaker has uploaded a Route 66 app specifically designed for RVs. Check the App Store. According to the podcast, it’s free. A labor of love.

Enjoy your trip!

Rt 66 trip soon

April 2021 didn't seem like a good time for the trip so it has been postponed to August 2021. Covid may still be an issue, but we are going to give ot a try

Route 66 has been a goal of mine for several years. Hoping to make the trip summer of 2022.

There are a number of RVers with YouTube channels that have done series on their trip along “The Mother Road” as Steinbeck referred to it. “The Nomadic Fanatic” has done multiple trips in both directions stopping at virtually every tourist spot along the way.

Good luck with your planning and as a new member myself, welcome to IRVillage!
