Share/Visitor View errors

My wife and I are full-timers and long-time RV Trip Wizard users.

We used to share our travel itinerary with friends and family using the “Share” feature. In the last several months, this has not been working. I thought it was simply a bug and would be corrected in a subsequent update, but it has actually gotten worse in the last week or two. I was going to report the issue via “Contact Us” but came to iRV2 first to see what other users are seeing/doing. Much to my surprise, I don’t find ANYTHING about this. I can’t imagine that I’m the only one using Share, so that makes me suspect I’m missing something.

Here is an explanation of what I see:

- From an any trip, select Trip Tools → Share Trips → Visitor View, and click on either the Public or Private link (issue occurs with both).
- In a different browser, or on another computer, try to open that link.

Up until several months ago, we would get a nice view of the trip. Then it started showing many “Routing Failed” messages but would still list the stop details. Starting about 2 weeks ago, we now see a pop-up message stating “Unable to load trip. Please refresh the page.” and we cannot load any further. If I try a refresh, it just takes me to the login page. I'm attaching a screen shot of the error.

I’ve tried this with various browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Opera) both while creating the link and trying to open it. Curiously, this works fine if I’m already logged in to Trip Wizard on a different tab of the same browser – with that same trip active! I tried a friend’s link while logged in, and I still get “Unable to load trip.”

Here is a link I created with the “Visitor View” for a dummy trip:
https://tripwizard.rvlife.com/app/vi...BOajhhcWpiUT09

Again, this looks like a bug, but I would have expected this forum to have lots of discussion of it. Does anyone have any idea what’s going on?

Thanks!
--Roger

We are aware of this problem and are working on a resolution. It would be best to contact the Help Desk when you encounter a problem. Our email is support@rvlife.com

Thanks for the information. I'm really surprised that it isn't discussed anywhere in this forum. I'll watch for updates.

Thanks!

Still a problem

I am getting this same error for our trips.

I used to send this link to share with our friends.

It *used* to be a great advertisement for RVTW. Not so much any more.

Does anyone know when this will be fixed?

tnx,
Paul

I am still waiting for the ETA for the fix. I have had many of my friends contact me that the links no longer work. Support just got back to me and told me to export to excel or some other nonsense... JFYI.

Bump... Over three weeks since its reported Here! Even my offshore developers might have corrected this by now, and they would have done it incorrectly 7 times before my onshore guys would have rewritten it to work and gone thru a contentious change control meeting and pushed out the update.

Is there an eta?

I am a first-time user and ran into the same problem, exactly as described by ramblingroos. So, the problem is system-wide and not yet fixed.

I inquired with customer support and Jeff said, "If you have the trip you wish to share open, go to Trip Tools and then select Print Trip Details. This will allow you to print various trip formats which in lieu of a paper print out you can print to a PDF document which can be saved then emailed to your friends/family as an attachment.

Another option is to email yourself the itinerary then forward that email on to your recipients."

Emailing the PDF works but forwarding the link still does not work.

Once you select the "Email your Itinerary" option you will have that itinerary in your email inbox. Forward that email to your friend's email address and he should get a copy of it - at that point it's not a link; it's a complete email message.

I received that exact same response a few weeks ago. Its a bit concerning its not fixed yet.

I tested it just now. Still Broken.

PS. Its very simple to test, bring up a Private Window and past either the Public or Private share links that can be given to non RVTW folks.

We have the same issue. We have links on our website blog to our various routes and now they no longer work. Wonder if they are going to fix it or just let it go without providing any explanation? Doesn't seem like it would be that difficult of a fix. Shame that it doesn't work. I've had to go and delete all the links to our routes :(

Hello all,

Let's make sure that RVLife knows how much this impacts us. Please be sure to send an email to support@rvlife.com and let them know why this is a problem and why "just use the export file" isn't a good enough answer.

In the meantime...

I've written a Python program that will take the GPX and Excel export files and merge them (getting stop details from the Excel) into a GPX file to import into Google My Maps. It is NOT a replacement for the share functionality, but it does give a map view of your trip along with dates, addresses, etc. It requires several manual steps and must be manually updated if the trip is changed.

I do not want to get into the software support business, but if anyone is interested and has the necessary skills to run and maintain Python code, I'd be willing to share. Let me know here or in a PM and I can start a new thread for that. To give you an idea of what the program does, the help text is included below.

Cheers!
Roger

Usage: rvtwShareMap.py [options]

Copyright 2024 Roger Gregory-Allen
Licensed under the Apache License 2.0
http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0

Options:
--version show program's version number and exit
-g GPXFILE, --gpxFile=GPXFILE
File from 'Trip Tools->Export->GPS Export->Download
.GPX'
-x XLSXFILE, --xlsxFile=XLSXFILE
File from 'Trip Tools->Export->Excel Export'
-o GPXOUTPUT, --gpxOutput=GPXOUTPUT
NEW GPX File to create
-v, --verbose Set verbosity level [default: 0]
-h, --help Show this help message and exit

This program was created to address the functionality lost since
the "Share" option for RV Trip Wizard (RVTW) has failed. It
is NOT a complete replacement, since the output is static and it
requires a few manual steps to implement. However, it does
provide a way to share your travel map, along with dates and stay
duration at each stop, and it can be manually updated when you
make changes to your trip plan.

This tool takes as input two existing Export files from RVTW;
the GPX file and the Excel file. The GPX file provides the
waypoints (stops) and routing, and the Excel file provides the
other details such as dates, etc. The collected information
is merged into a new GPX file which now includes the dates, etc.
in a description field. That GPX file can then be imported into
Google 'My Maps' and shared from there.

Note that this code was written in June of 2024 and is entirely
dependent on the data formats used by RVLife at that time, as
well as functionality of 'My Maps' as of that date. Very little
error checking is done and this script will very likely fail when
updates are made to either of those external tools.

Caution: The two export files must be from exactly the same trip.
The code depends on the lat/lon matching exactly in order to
assign the stop details to each waypoint. If this is not right,
the program will probably crash with a useless error message.

Steps to usage:
1) From RVTW, go to 'Trip Tools->Export->GPS Export->Download .GPX'
and save the file in a convenient directory.
2) Select Trip Tools->Export->Excel Export, and save the file
into the same directory.
3) Run this script like so:
rvtwShareMap.py --gpxFile=[exported GPX] --xlsxFile=[exported Excel] --gpxOutput=[your new GPX file]
4) Open Google 'My Maps' from https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/?hl=en
(be sure you are already logged in to Google).
5) Click 'CREATE A NEW MAP' then 'Create'
6) Click on 'Import' on the Untitled Layer (or add layer
if modifying)
7) Browse to the new GPX file and let Maps load it
8) Review resulting map and waypoints
9) Click on the 'Share' button near the top. Give the map a name,
select "Anyone with this link can view" and copy the link.
10) Send that copied link to your friends and family.

Anyone with the shared link should be able to open the map in a
browser and click on each of the stops to get information such as
Name, address, arrival date, and length of stay. They must be logged
into their Google account (or create one).

NOTE: This is a STATIC view of your trip.

If you make any changes to your trip, they are not reflected in this
map unless you recreate or modify it. You can update the map manually
by deleting the first layer you created, adding a new layer and
import new export files from RVTW. The existing link should then
reflect the changed trip.
