Shortest vs fastest

Is there a routing app that uses a gps dongle for real time viewing on a large screen such as a laptop? My favorite was the Trips and Travel program no longer supported by Microsoft.
Many times I have been routed to an unfamiliar and risky road because I only get the two or three route options. I prefer freeway driving as much as possible and when I select a route on the small mobile phone screen or my Rand McNally gps I cannot always discern where a freeway route is available for driving. My safest plan is to select the route and then review ahead of time each turn or exit, no routing on the fly or you will get in trouble.

If there is a current one I haven't found it.

We use RV Trip Wizard RVTW for planning, it is excellent, then switch to, DeLorme's Street Atlas on my laptop for actual navigating. It was abandoned in 2016, MS abandoned Streets and Trips in 2012. I have a copy of that too. Street Atlas is OK but slow to adjust to the gps for most of the trip until the last few miles when we often just use Google on my wife's phone. All this is a PITA. RVTW has a phone navigation app, RV LIfe, but I haven't tried it yet.
