Waypoint puzzlement

Would welcome a little insight into what I'm doing wrong here:

I'm routing myself from Detroit to Duluth. RVTW routes me through Chicago, but I want to drive across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Per directions, I show the entire trip, select Drag Route, click on the original I94 route and drag to roughly where I-75 runs north through Michigan. Obviously, this is not a zoomed in view, and the new route parallels I-75 for the most part, but does not track it precisely. A look at turn by turn shows that the new route periodically has me leave I-75 to drive through a small town or two before returning to the approximate north-south route. Point is, if I used the waypoints as literal waypoints on my GPS, it'd be a VERY long time before I made it north. And the more fine-tuning I try to do, the more convoluted the new route becomes. I assume I'm doing something wrong here in how I drag or how many waypoints I create, or something. Would welcome any guidance.

Manheim - it's a little difficult to understand exactly what is going on. With waypoints, you can drag your route to whereever you want to say avoid downtown Chicago. When you drag your route, it will go through the "waypoint" that you dragged the route to and most efficiently route yourself to go from point A -> waypoint -> B. If you drag the waypoint to a wrong location, you can delete it by clicking on the trashcan.

One other option is that you could always go from A -> POI along the route you want to go -> B. This can accomplish the same goal of avoiding a congested area. Also, did you check out the video on dragging routes?
