EVAP and fuel system help needed

Hey everyone. I am getting a large “whooshing” sound every time I open my gas cap. 1971 Olds 455 powered Revcon 250.

Unfortunately, I lost the original gas cap. Replaced it with one from NAPA. Should I have a vented or non vented cap?

Also, I’ve been going ahead and opening the gas cap when I stop on the road. If I don’t, the gas tank sounds like it is under pressure to implode.

Could my charcoal cannister need replacing? Any other EVAP type items to check for!

Can someone give me a brief education on what I should have in a 1971 Revcon as far as emission and fuel items to look for?

Just want to be safe in the road!

I really don't think there's much of an evap system in the early "70 versions on these RV's. A vented gas cap at best. I found no evidence of a charcoal canister and I took out the tank, and had it boiled as well as replaced all fuel lines. That said, I have experienced pressurizing of the tank on long trips, but no vapor lock (yet -- )

I may look at a retrofit evap system of some sort. Most likely I'll get the vented cap right.

Hey Brad. Thanks for the reply. So I drilled a tiny hole into my previously unvented gas cap is such that it will now vent. That took care of the large pressure, with only a little suction pressure after a nice ride today.

I could not find a charcoal canister in mine either. I have never dropped the gas tank so thanks for the information on what to expect.

On my ride today, everything was running so smoothly it was amazing! I am getting down to just details now to really have a road worthy Revcon!

I appreciate the response!
