Alaska 2024 Tour - Need opinion on when to schedule

Investigating traveling with a caravan or similar starting and ending in BC. Most have two bookings for similar number of days (48 - 50) days: June-July or July-August. Most cover all of the high points we want to see inland and the coast.

Without opening a discussion on merits of caravans, I would like opinions on which period of time might be the best and why, from those that did either or both.

Bugs and rain are a given, I expect. What about crowds at popular locations? Late August weather? Ability to schedule free day excursions (Flightseeing, train trips, fishing, etc..) without reserving ahead?

We're coming from Connecticut, so a significant portion of this trip is going to be getting there and back as well.

Thanks in advance.

If your in a caravan you probably will have built in days for entertainment and charter fishing. Helicopter sight seeing ect. Can't tell you, specifically bout caravans other than when we drove up the from Dawson Creek, we followed a 32 rv caravan and intertwined with them throughout our 60 day trip. We reserved far in advance, for all our must see/do activities. Caravan wagon masters offer you, your choices. Don't miss the Cassier highway coming back. Enjoy

Of the two time periods you mentioned, I would choose July/August..... less chance of rain & bugs.

You may luck out and have a bug-free time as we did one year. It was the driest summer and we had absolutely no issues. Every year won't be like that!

Going into August the bugs tend to be worse so agree June/July option, although can be experienced at any time but seem worse in August when we've been up there at various times.

Enjoy it's beautiful going through BC, Yukon and if option to take both highways one up the other back = awesome!

We are looking to do the same trip next year.

Leaning toward mid June through mid September. Traveling from NH, will take us a good while to get there. Planning East West through Canada, month in AK, then West East through Northern US.

See my post looking for fellow travelers.

Cheers!
