During the peak months at least 3 caravans are going and coming. We went in 2012, and all of the campgrounds were at least 3/4 full every night we were there.(a few were 100% full) I suspect all 3 caravans were running close together that year, although they normally try hard to coordinate their movements.

That said, unless you have a need for FHU every night, there are lots of boondocking spots along the "highways"; we call them turnouts in the lower 48. I've never heard of anyone having an issue with boondocking along the roads to/from Alaska.
If we get to go again, we will not make any reservations, just play it by ear-so to speak.

We had a rule that we were stopped for the night by 3pm and never had an issue getting a spot with hookups. Some of them might not have been our first choice but always got a spot. The caravans are a pita, as most of them travel so close to each other and so slow that its impossible to pass as you have to pass all of them at once. We made a point of leaving in the am before they did so we could travel our own pace and stop as we pleased.

We had no advanced reservations for our 40' Motorhome with Toad during our 4.5 month trip. A few places we called a few days ahead, but mainly due to holiday's like memorial day, July 4th and Labor day. (canada's Labor day is the same as ours) Never more than a week prior to arrival. Often I would call the day before getting somewhere just so I could say I had a reservation. If you drive late in the day, then you probably want reservations as most places on the "route" fill by early evening. But if you stop by 3pm, most places were not full during our trip. Some of our best campsites were in first come first serve campgrounds. Get there early! -Bill
