Alaska highway 2017
Here is an update for those that might be traveling to Alaska anytime soon. We just came down from our home in Palmer, Alaska and are currently outside of St Helens Oregon. The roads in AK are OK, but have the normal bad section between Glenn Allen and Tok. Watch for the frost heaves and take your time. The Alcan was in some of the best shape we have seen in years. The normal area between Beaver Creek and Destruction Bay was better then it normally is. The bad section here was from Donjek River to Burwash Landing. Take your time here!!!! There was sections of construction all along the Alcan but none of them were bad yet! As usual we saw a good amount of wildlife, but expect to see more when we go back in May.
We had no issues with customs either going into Canada or coming back into the U.S. At Canadian customs (Beaver Creek) we declared our fire arms, paid the fee and were on our way. Coming back into the U.S. at Sumas, we waited 50 minutes in line. When we got to the agent, he asked us two questions and we were on our way! The quickest we have ever come through U.S. customs.
We will be in the 'lower 48 for a few weeks and then head back home mid May.
You all have safe travels!!!!!

Leaving for Alaska on June 1st, 2017
Thanks for the update. We are leaving June 1st. I would like to hear more about your trip and what is worth our time to see or do.
Can I contact you in St. Helens? I live in Portland and could easily drive out to see you.

To all, we did not travel the Cassier. I prefer to travel through Ft Nelson.
Weapons, I carry a pump shotgun (12 gauge) and a Marlin lever action 44 Mag rifle. While I am a pistol instructor, going through Canada these two do me just fine. One thing to remember is that when asked by the Canadian Border Patrol, you are not carrying a firearm through Canada for self protection! Also long guns need to have a lock on them while you are in Canada.
We are not in St Helens and more as we are in Coburg at the Monaco Center getting some work done. We will be here till the end of the week when we head to Medford for a couple days.
There is lots to see and do driving through Canada, depending on the route you are taking. Just some highlights, the log lodge at Muncho lake is worth the stop, if nothing else just to see it. Laird hot springs can be interesting for those that would like a good hot bath. Also in this area watch for the bison that live along the road. Early spring it is fun to watch the new calves. Stop at Watson Lake and walk through the area that has all of the license plates. Whitehorse is also a good place to spend some time. Lots of history here!
There is lots to see and do on this route. We normally do not take too much time to 'stop and smell the roses' so there is lots that I did not cover.
Everyone have fun and safe travels!

thanks for the explanation! i was aware hunting rifles are ok but no pistols allowed crossing canadian border. before entering canada last time, i had to wrap my handgun very well and buried it in a pile of rocks. retrieved it upon return .

Question. Since the choices on the Canadian Firearms Declaration form for the reason for the firearms are: Hunting, Competition, In Transit, Protection against wildlife and Other; what do you personally select and say is your reason? Thanks for your help.

We list 'in transit' as the reason. It has always worked for us. It also helps when I am going to meet someone in the 'lower 48' to shoot with.
Remember it is Canada their country and their laws!!!!

Just be prepared to answer questions about your 'reason'.

So, the "Protection against wildlife" isn't a good response?
