Since retirement we are lucky as well to have the time to travel, not the same luck with the border crossings.

Curious on how you got thru the border leaving Alaska. I had couple friends turned around at the border, told them they were non- essential travelers. Only letting people thru if they were moving, military transferring, or going to a job and had to have proof of a job.

Coming back to Alaska no problem if you’re a resident and had a covid test. Guess it depends on which border guard you get.

I had a couple of reasons to travel through Canada from Alaska. One being medical and the other business.

How about taking the car ferry to Alaska? There are twice monthly sailings between Bellingham WA and Whittier AK on the Alaska Marine Highway System. It can be expensive, but the advantage is that it never touches Canada on the trip - you leave the US and arrive in the US.

We used to live in Soldotna AK and made the trip many times, both driving the Alaska Highway and taking the ferry. Pros and cons to each. The ferry is also the way i transported firearms between AK and the L48.

Another option to consider...

I looked at the ferry this past summer just as an alternative to driving the cost was over 10,000 dollars for my motor home and Jeep toad. Another drawback is pets have to kept in vehicle and they only allow pet visitation about every eight or nine hours. Taking firearms through Canada is not difficult at all. The CBP website has the forms you need to fill out before reaching the border there is a twenty five dollar (Canadian money) fee and your good to go. I have never had my rifles even looked at. I took pictures of serial numbers and the rifles for insurance. Simply declare the rifles walk in for processing and you’re off. Has never taken me more than 15 minutes to take rifles through the border.
