California to Alaska - Salmon fishing

Has anyone gone to Alaska for the salmon run in August? And if so, how are the roads, camping locations and other pertinent information?

First I'd plan on getting the "Milepost Magazine" or Church's book on camping in Alaska. They'll have all the info you'll need on camping. As far as the fishing....it's a blast!!! One pic of me, the other with my dtr. who flew up because she loves to fish.

Woodalls has an excellent forum titled "Canada/Alaska". You will get a lot of good information there. They have a continuous post going right now on "Alaska 2015" for those going this coming year. However, check on the post "Alaska 2014" for many comments on Alaskan fishing done this past year.

The biggest camping problem is the US and to mid BC. After that there are so many pull offs to sleep over now problem and with a little planning the US to mid BC is no problem either. Roads will be as good as they get, June and July to fix them before you get there. Books as above and have fun in the fishing holes. You will have several friends on your shoulders and maybe a bear or two. Processing is EZ if you charter. and if you don't you already know what to do. You will have canners and processing places around that you can have the fish flash frozen and shipped home if you wish or many have a small freezer to plug in every night on the way home. You can also have the fish shipped if you have someone who can deal with it at home. Temps should be all but shirt sleve as just now starting to freeze and snow in Fairbanks.

We agree on the Milepost as a great source of information.

The MILEPOST: Alaska Travel Guide and Trip Planner

Homer, Alaska is a great place for all kinds of fishing, including charters. Lived there for decades. Coal Point Seafood will process your catch and ship it for you as well:

Alaska seafood from Coal Point Seafoods, Homer, Alaska. Specializing in the highest quality Alaskan seafoods. halibut, smoked salmon, king salmon, red salmon, silver salmon, king crab, dungeness crab, scallops, shrimp and more

There are lots of charter fishing companies:

Homer Alaska Charter Association, halibut and salmon fishing charters

Camping on The Spit is either boondock style, or all the goodies. Lots of shopping, fantastic sites, float plane trips, and history as well. Don't miss the Pratt Museum while you're there.

Pratt Museum: Arts, Science, and Culture of Kachemak Bay, Alaska

Have a great trip! (Ship your seafood to us, and we'll - umm - take care of it for you...)
