Good points! Any experience with the pet areas on the ships? I don’t dare leave our 4 month old puppy in the MH by herself during the transit.

Different pet areas on every ship ( or series of ships ) and I haven't been on the ferries out of Nanaimo, but the pet area is usually on the main car deck; open sided deck as opposed to the sealed area where you can't stay. Only guide dogs are allowed on the passenger deck. But at least you can stay in the pet area, view isn't great.

We unhitched the car, making it $55 instead of $120 for the car (2 years ago). We informed the person at the ticket booth that we were together and she directed us both to the oversized line to ensure we would be on the same sailing. As the vehicles loaded, the car was waved toward the car ramp. Of course, the animal issue would be an additional twist.
