Canadian Border Checks

How thorough are they? Any chance of hiding a weapon where they cannot find it? If found, do they confiscate it or haul you off to jail? Or both?

I just hate being without self defense on a very long trip. Our entry and exit points on the border will be hundreds of miles apart so we can’t leave something in a secure place. Has anyone ever sent a weapon to a FFL gun dealer near where you will cross back into the USA so you can pick it up there?

DON'T try and hide it! If found you'll spend time in jail, your rig can be confiscated and be banned from the country permanently along with having a criminal record from then on which might prohibit you from owning guns.

I'll 2nd that....I wouldn't even post that you were even thinking about it. You have to respect the rules of our friendly neighbors to the north. Gun laws and rules need to be adhered to 100% especially with what has gone on last few months.

Not to get off subject, when we crossed over the border at Sweetgrass MT. (2016) (no guns) about 500' after the border guard station there was a sign for "watercraft inspection" I wasn't sure if should pull over as I had two inflatable kayaks, both in their carrier bag, plus inside another vinyl secondary bag.

Just to play it safe I pulled over, he inspected both kayaks (inflatable). And then handed me paperwork to keep with me. I asked him what happens if someone just drove their boat trailer or roof-top canoe past your inspection station without stopping....He said a fine would be issued. We drive after them...

I agree with Mr D, definitely not worth the risk.

I would not risk it. I guess I was asking just in case one of my ordinarily well hidden weapons gets overlooked to take out before the trip.

It is against the law.
Common sense alone says why try it!
So why ask?
Yes, the gun will be confiscated, yes, you will be apprehended, and yes, your vehicle will be confiscated, and rightfully so.
Why would you possibly feel you would need to smuggle a gun into Canada?
We are not a country of guns, nor do we want to be one.
If you have that much fear for your safety, stay home.

You can legally import a long gun. There is a procedure you have to go thru and pay a fee. Look it up on a Canadian website.

If they ask you about guns and you say no and they then search your rig and find one, you stand a good chance of having the rig confiscated and you won't get it back. Also note that when they search your rig, you are not allowed to be in it, they can tear it completely apart if they want to and you have zero recourse

I get the feeling he is not trying to smuggle a gun into Canada. He is probably travelling the US and carries his gun in a normal safe manner. Now if he decides to make a side trip into Canada, he is wondering what he should do. Short of finding a safe storage locker on the US side (unlikely), he will have to find a way to get the gun home. I don't think it can go US mail and you really wouldn't want a package like that sitting on your front porch while you are vacationing. Perhaps he can pawn it for a loan, make the payments, and re-claim it on the way back (assuming he is coming back the same way). Then again, it might be cheaper to just buy a new one. . Probably best to go without on this vacation trip... a lot less hassle.

DON'T go where the bad guys are (downtown / north end of Winnipeg). Get BEAR spray ... have only used it to test it. Eyes, Lips - burned and coughed for an hour and that was sprayed with the wind well away from me YIKS.

Take it/THEM to a Gun Shop and have it SHIPPED to a FFL/Gun Shop near your EXIT point from Canada.

Do NOT forget ANY weapons........Do NOT forget to get rid of ALL Ammo also

Do NOT attempt to 'hide' any weapon and cross Canada Borders

Do NOT act like an idiot where it comes to Canada Gun Laws.

"I forgot is NOT an acceptable/justifiable excuse"......it will cost YOU!

DO NOT DO IT........

Thanks hoosierrun. You are correct. I am not a smuggler, as suggested by a couple of folks here. Just want to have the benefit of everyone’s knowledge.
