Tampa to PEI

What is the fastest route from Tampa Fl to Prince Edward Island avoiding the DC and NYC mess. Is a major portion of I84 closed or does my version of Google Maps have a detour glitch. Planning a fast trip north to maximize extended travel thru PEI, NL, and NS in late August, September, and early October. Will appreciate any advice or observations.😎

I traveled the I81 to I84 route on our return to the NE from FL the first week of April and had no problems. There is always some construction around Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, but nothing serious. We boondock at Mohegan Sun Poconos in WB, several restaurants in casino. Only issue is finding a level spot to park, their lot is not exactly level, but doable.

We also went to PEI, Then took the ferry to NL last August, wonderful people, beautiful area. A couple of comments, the flies in PEI were plentiful, but I would do it again. We stayed at Marco Polo CG.

In NL take the time to go to Lance aux Meadows, well worth the trip. It seemed that it was always windy but we made it work. Grand Codroy is the place to stay while waiting for the ferry back to Nova Scotia. We have a dog so we took the overnight ferry and left him in the coach, they only allow them to stay in the coach or crated in the ship kennel. We felt he would be more comfortable in his own home, you can NOT visit them during the trip, so that is why we did the overnight.

Some of the CG’s start to close up late September, so do your NL leg early.

If you want more info PM me.

Tampa to PEI

Bob... basically two- no, three- ways to get yourself onto the I-81/I-84 route.
1 - up I-95 into SC, then I-26W through Columbia, Asheville, and connecting I-81 near Kingsport TN.
1A- as above, but from Columbia take I-77N through Charlotte and connecting I-81 at Ft Chiswell VA.
Both of these routes will give you a beauty ride free of delays, unless through proper planning you manage to hit Charlotte at rush hour. They will each also take you through a fairly brief area of impressive mountain grade and scenery while crossing the first Appalachian ridge. If you prefer to avoid this sort of route, disregard.

2- I-95N into VA. At Richmond, take the I-295 bypass. It only adds about 3-4 miles and is almost always free of substantial traffic. Farther north at Fredericksburg, take the US17/US50 route to join I-81N at Winchester.

Ride I-81N to Scranton to I-84E. As an alternate, you can take I-80E to I-287/I-87N to intersect I-84. I do not recommend taking I-78E. It is an older, smaller interstate, in rather poor shape, and is a primary trucking route directly into the Port of Newark. I also do not recommend continuing on I-287 across the Tappan Zee Bridge and north on I-684 to I-84 at Brewster. I-684 in both directions has numerous areas of old, decayed, uneven concrete roadway that is well worth avoiding. Take I-84E through CT to I-90 (briefly) in MA. You’ll likely still find some construction around Waterbury CT, but the state has been working hard on this for some years. The great bulk of I-84 in CT is in good shape. (Although they do seem to have a hard time finding people who can construct a smooth bridge joint.)
Ride the I-495 loop around Boston and rejoin I-95N on the north shore of MA. You’ll shortly be in NH and on your way northward, having bypassed the entire Northeast Corridor Metroplex.

If you do 95 to 26 to Charlotte and 77. I Suggest you look at another route on 77 from Charlotte to Statesboro. Lots of construction on 77 around the lake and the traffic is already heavy there. If you have lots of time and patience you might be OK. Otherwise the traffic is heavy, stop and go and narrow lanes

Having been to the east coast of Canada three times in the last six years, here is a few tips as I see it. You had NL on your thread. I guess this mean NFLD. Newfoundland is quite a bit farther than Nova Scotia. Well worth the trip. I love all the east coast provinces. I found PEI the least interesting. I went there and travelled the entire perimeter of the island. It pretty much all looks the same. If I was going to do PEI again, I would take the free ferry to the island, then return on the Confederation bridge. Its free either way to get on the island, you have to pay to get off, and the bridge is cheaper. This way you can still spend some time on the island, because it is nice. You still get to see Charlettetown, and a good chunk of the island. Do it on your return trip as the ferry is more east than the bridge. I know I will get flack for saying so, but I believe there is much nicer things to see on the east coast. The bay of Fundy is fascinating. The changing tides is something to see. Halifax is great, as well as all the stuff around it. Peggys cove, Lunenburg, Fort Louisbourg, etc. The Cabot trail is one of North Americas top drives in Cape Breton. Most dont recommend taking the rv, although I did see rvs on the road. Better if you have engine brakes on a larger rv. You can drive it in a toad on one day, but two is better. NFLD is another trip in itself. We went for two weeks on the island, and wish we would have had much more. Icebergs and Lans eau Meadow, at the north end, whales at St. Vincent Beach, Gros Morne NP, St John Harbour, Twillengate, and much more. Not much for rv parks or restaurants in the rural areas, but you can park almost anywhere. There are some rv parks, but few and far between. We used an website called iceberg finder to locate the icebergs. The year we went, we had to go all the way up to St. Anthony to see icebergs. Most years they come farther south. There is so much more about the east coast Im not mentioning. You will love it, and the people are the most friendly you will meet. Buy a national park pass. It covers Gros Morne, Fort Louisburg, The Citadel at Halifax, and many more. Its also good all the way across Canada. Hope this helps. Cheers.

Thanks again all. We, wife and 7lb Sish Tzu, head north on our Maritimes tour in mid to late August. We're driving a new Dynamax 30FW towing a Canyon 4dr 4x4. I'm familiar with the 95/26 route having lived on th Va/Tn border for many years. The 77 cut off to 81 looks like my best option and then to 84 for points east. How many $ should l initially fund an E-ZPass to cover the Mass toll roads. Our planned Maritimes itinerary looks like this... stop in Moncton for a couple of nights fo a toad trip to Hopewell Rocks to watch the tides. Cross the Federation Bridge into PEI for a week and then ferry to Nova Scotia for a week in the Cape Breton area. Take the ferry to Port aux Basques for 10 days more or less in New Foundland.Take the ferry (don't know which one, depends on weather) back to Nova Scotia for another week or 10days and then exit from Digby by ferry to St John. From there we'll try to find our way back home to Marco Island before the snows lock us in! Ambitious I know but the big clock is winding down. Any advice will be welcomed.😎

Your first toll should be the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge (I/84), over the Hudson in NY, we pay $11.50 with 5 axles. Mass Pike (I/90) to I/495 we pay $3.50+- but get a Mass EZ discount; so you will pay about $5+-. I can't help with any beyond there.

Avoid 77 from Charlotte to Statesville

+2. Very narrow and congested through the area.

I also bypass I-84 in Connecticut, I go up I-87 to the Mass Pike Exit "to I-90 East". Connecticut can be bad. I also love the rest stops on the NY Thruway and Mass Pike. New York will offer discounts to Motorhomes that have an NY E-ZPass. I never got around to that and the NY Thruway can be pricy for 25 tons and 5 axles.

In addition to the tolls already mentioned, I believe there are still a couple of tolls on I-95 going north from MA into NH, then I-95 is the Maine Turnpike for the first 100 miles or so— as far as Augusta. That’ll cost about $25, assuming a Class 5 vehicle. I don’t know if toll roads in eastern Canada.
So, I’d say you could load $50 into the EZPass and that will get you there. Personally, I’d drop a hundred in for the round trip. You can adjust if necessary.

Since this doesn't address the OP's request for routing suggestions I apologize for an off-topic reply, however, you might consider attending this event on Cape Breton Island, NS:

https://celtic-colours.com/

October 5 – 13, 2018

Celtic Colours is an experience like no other. For nine days in October, Cape Breton Island is alive with music, energy and excitement as people come from far and wide to celebrate our rich culture. From concerts to dances and workshops to community suppers, the festival offers a full range of events against a gorgeous backdrop of autumn colours.

Also, be aware that for much of New England, Columbus Day weekend marks the closing of many of the campgrounds.

Take care,
Stu
