Traveling on ALCAN Highway- need recommendations

Hey all. Need some recommendations.

Wifey does all the planning and Navigation and we are heading out of Washington State onto AlCAN Highway toward Alaska and need some recommendation where we can stop for a night or more as we travel.

Most places she is seeing provincial parks show 32' limitations. We have a 40' Tiffin Phaeton towing. Prefer not to dry dock but need some ideas.

Any recommendations?

Ted

Get Mike and Terri Church's book 'Alaskan Camping' which also includes Canada and the Yukon. That's all you need. It includes RV parks and public campgrounds along with great boondocking spots. We had no problems with our 40' motorhome using public campgrounds or boondocking. The 'Milepost' is great for history of the areas while traveling. We each took turns driving each day & the other read aloud as we were passing things of interest. It also includes a good road map.

Ya, both Milepost and Mike and Terri Church's book are great.

I would absolutely NOT plan each night's stop ahead of time. Unless you are on a REAL time-critical schedule, "plan" each day as you see it.

Almost infinite number of places to pull off the road. Never hear of a problem on any of them.

You could see a beautiful lake and decide to stop before noon. Or it could be raining and you are tired of driving.

JUST DO IT.

BTW, we have driven the Alcan 4 times, starting in 1975 before it was paved.

Done the trip 4 times now. We are a 34', 36'LOA 5er, 55' LOA with truck.

The only reservations that we ever made were for Teklaneka deep inside Denali. The rest we just had a plan A & a plan B. We favoured the Provincial parks of AB & BC as well as the Government CGs of YT. Fantastic CGs all of them.

The only times we used private CGs was when laundry needed doing or in a major town such as White Horse for supplies. The trick for getting a large site is to get off the road early, 2:30-3:30, before all of the daily high mileage people flutter in.

Often there are only a few sites long enough for big rigs so you need to get there as early as possible before you arrive to find a truck camper or a small B or C sitting in one of the few long sites. People are just thoughtless.

The private CGs are just like the lower 48. Always room for big stuff but zero northern flavour to them.
