Given the recent events in the USA. Dayton Ohio and El Paso Texas.
How safe is traveling and staying in the USA?
We do shop at Walmart however do not go to night clubs.
Planing on a winter trip from western Canada to Southern Arizona or California.

very safe. while these events are horrific and tragic they are not the norm anymore than an air crash means it is unsafe to fly. use common sense and trust your gut. if a situation or place feels hinky then leave.

Three people murdered in Manitoba doesn't mean it's not safe to visit Canada. These horrific events are not at all usual. You are more likely to be killed in a highway crash.

Well... Canada has 2 serial killers on the loose. How safe is it to travel in Canada? About the same I suppose.

According to Nation Master, the US has 3 times the number of murders versus Canada but we also have a higher population, 37 million compared to 320 plus? million. Sure, we do have higher crime in general and much higher crime if you want to look at a particular offense but there's also an awful lot of folks just like you. I would think you would be fine.

I gotta ask...

A driver for AYR/New Brunswick told us once that Canada used to "induct" new prison inmates by mechanically administering a "Cat-O-9 Tails" so the person would not forget where they were going and again upon release so the would not forget where they had been. Any truth to this statement? Sounds like a painful deterrent to ward off recidivism.

I was beaten and robbed on the road between Whitehorse (Johnson's Corner) and Carcross. They broke my neck. When I tried to flag down a Mountie, he just waggelled his finger at me as he drove by. Then, because my wallet and bag were gone, I got rousted for being a vagrant -- no medical attention or food. I still travel that road. Like Canada, the USA is a big place. You can't paint it all with the same brush.

It's safe. It's even safe to stay in the U.S. in towns near the border. Really! Enjoy your trip.

We actually find ourselves avoiding large gatherings. Increase your awareness and you should be find. It is not stopping us but does make us more aware of our surroundings.

I think that it is appropriate that you ask your question. It is timely, and it points out that as nomads, we don’t always have a good understanding of the areas that we overnight in. I hope that your question was answered, and that you now feel a little bit more comfortable in traveling south.

Local knowledge is best obtained from...well locals. I live within a 45 minutes from the US/Mexico border in Southern California. I feel that it is as safe here as anywhere else. There are areas, around here, as with many towns, that I would not feel as safe in (particularly at night) as others.

As you firm up your itinerary, please feel free to ask questions about specific towns or areas. Hopefully we can ease your mind there as well. I hope that you enjoy your time in the USA as much as we enjoy our time in Canada.

As always, be situationally aware. If your inner alarm goes off for some reason, listen to it, and move on without remorse. We have occasionally...and didn’t feel the least bit embarrassed about it.

The governments of New Zealand and Ireland have similar warnings for their citizens traveling to the USA.

The use of common sense prevails as well as situational awareness. Hard not to use common sense when in the produce department at Walmart or at a country music concert.

Unfortunately we will and have to be vigilant and hope for the best..knowing full well we are not traveling in Canada.

Truthfully, we are visiting Canada soon and WE are a bit wary. Especially after what a previous poster wrote about their experience.
BTW; how about God Bless ALL of us everywhere. Crime and killings are not limited to just one country. I recall a few terrorist bombings in Europe- so very sad.

We travel all over the USA but then again we are from the USA. Yes, we have problems just like any other country. Consider Canada has had a dozen or more killings in 2019 alone, so is any place absolutely safe? No, stupid people doing stupid things can happen anywhere.

We have Canadian friends that spend several of the Winter months in the USA. They are not back home in Canada for the Summer. They will return again to the USA in the Winter.

more than a few. there’s danger everywhere but everywhere is a large place. there’s risk in everything we do. just getting up in the morning can be detrimental to your health. driving our vehicles is risky but we’ve become accustomed to it. live your lives,

In further exploring how safe it is to travel in the USA this travel advisory came up in my google search. I guess like any thing else..one needs to consider the source and take everything with a grain of salt.

The countries of Canada,New Zealand and Germany have indicated similar travel warnings,however, not as strongly worded.

There are no travel warnings for those countries related to similar instance that happened in El Paso Texas or Dayton Ohio.
