Is it irresponsible to vacation in Mexico?
I'm not into the political aspect of this coronavirus, so...
Family has been pretty well staying at home. We go to the grocery store and I go to work (there are 7 of us in the office). We've been out to eat a handful of times. We go to the beach every weekend and sit waaaayyyy away from everyone.
I am about to lose some free nights with Marriott if they aren't used.
The options at this point are Cancun or Cabo next week.
All of a sudden I got convicted that I would feel terrible if I got the virus on vacation and came back and gave it to my office staff, parents or children.
Thoughts?

One thing is for certain, everyone will have an opinion. Have you contacted Marriott to see if they might extend the free night offer during these times? The only question you have to answer for yourself is, are the free nights worth the risk of possibly getting stuck accross the border or exposing yourself, your loved ones or your co workers to the virus.
Best of luck with your decision

Check travel restrictions and have fun.
Sooner or later, every person on this planet (and probably the folks on the International Space Station) will be exposed to COVID19.

Dsallach, they've already moved them and I don't think they will again.
that's what i keep telling my wife - are points, free nights and vacation worth it? Can you imagine getting the virus, giving it to your elderly parents and one of them dying? Granted, you can get it from the local HEB, too.

Don't think I would want to stay in a hotel these days... few years ago, my hotel had bed bugs and I brought them home. Was a very expensive hotel stay!

I would assume you would fly to Cancun or Cabo. Personally I would be concerned about some restriction changing while I was gone or catching something and being barred from the flight due to a temperature check. Personally I would err on the side of caution and not go but, it is just that, a personal family decision.
Can you use the points stateside where you could at least drive?

Think you just made the right decision! Air travel, plus the hotel... all are breeding grounds for Covid! Then, Mexico is having a surge... how are they masking up?

The heck with the virus, it's the crime that puts me off. When there were those murders in the main streets of Acapulco years ago, we decided we would never go back to Mexico.
Too bad because the scenery and people are wonderful.

Phone Marriott, they extended the expiry of my 3 free nights to the end of the year. My regular points are safe until Feb 2022.

You do know that the borders between the US and both Canada and Mexico have been closed to non essential travel for months now right? You couldn't go it you wanted to.

My sister in law and her family went to Hawaii for a wedding. They were supposed to be there for 5 days. Covid panic hit and they were stuck there for 5 weeks before they could come home. Fortunately they were staying with friends so it didn't cost them a years salary but still.
