I wish this would happen some. Many years ago I would take my tax refund money each year to buy a side of beef and a side of hog. I would go to a local slaughter house to pick out what I wanted and they would cut it, wrap it and freeze it for me to pick up.

I was surprised a while back when I went to a local Piggly Wiggly and a Greer's for meat. Some of their meat where products of Mexico.

….probably the exception but a quite large family-owned meat market in our local town in south Texas is supplied locally and is going gang busters... good prices and great selection and quality.....again, not your "mom & pop" butcher shop but not a chain store either......

Been getting my meat there for years. Usually buy the “freezer packs” and always have kept my stand-up freezer and fridge/freezers full. Luckily we had just filled the freezers before this pandemic started. Heading there today after work as a matter of fact, before prices go any higher. Everyone will be effected by this. And panic will make it worse.
We’ve thought about raising chickens and rabbits in the past... seriously contemplating this again. Love me some fwied wabbit!

I'll just leave this right here: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-h...-idUSKBN22N0IN
"CHICAGO (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump ordered meat processing plants to stay open to protect the nation’s food supply even as workers got sick and died. Yet the plants have increasingly been exporting to China while U.S. consumers face shortages, a Reuters analysis of government data showed."

And we are importing meat
Foreign ownership of most of the meat production in the US is a problem
You better check another source before you get to carried away and look at real numbers
I have been around the meat production area my entire life and we have strived to expand exports to increase profits
You do know Smithfield and JBS are both completely foriegn owners?

I'm there with you, but doubt you'll ever be able to convince enough people it's worth the extra money the food will cost. People are so used to the bargain basement prices from Costco and Walmart that it will be nearly impossible to get people to pay what it would cost to do what you're suggesting. As much as I'd love to see it happen, I'm not counting on it.

Same problem happened with masks. We shipped millions of pounds of masks to China in February/March when our hospitals and communities suffered w/out masks.
Right now, I'm struggling to find beef. I've got 4 days of beef left.
Sarcastically, since there are 100% grass fed cattle around, ranchers that will let you pick one out to buy and a slaughter house just 80 miles away, I want to buy a cow. I just need a big azz freezer

Any big game/deer hunter should know how to butcher a steer/hog. Just go in partnership with a couple of buddies and divide up the meat. Just like was done in the old days!

That was probably to fill orders placed in Dec/Jan when our country was not even interested in buying mask.

I did have the months wrong. It was in January and February. $17m worth of masks were shipped to China that we could have used to reduce the spread.

Meat production is in trouble and we will all pay higher prices from now on
There will be second guessing from now until the end of time on CV
What CV has shown for a fact is tightly packed urban areas are a problem for pandemics
They are also dependent on others to bring their food
Smaller rural areas tend to be mentality independent and sustainable without government help
If we dilute our economy with 3 trillion more synthetic computer generated dollars we should be able to destroy the middle class effectively
So far very low death rate for meat packer workers which is very positive
I have personally known many who worked or still work at the packers
They are hard working people who enjoy earning their money as opposed to living on the system
There are social organizers who try to get camera time that would lead you to believe otherwise

Country boys will survive.
