Ohio campground update

During Governor DeWine's TV conference today he was asked by a reporter about campgrounds and canoe liveries. The reporter said they had talked to those owners and they were confident they could comply with social distancing requirements.

The Governor stated that he and his wife have camped all over the United States, which was good to hear. He said the issue once again are the common areas and non-family members being too close. He also said this issue would be looked at yet this month.

He did say that attendance at Ohio state parks is up right now and only one had to be closed, Hocking Hills, I think, because their trails and layout had too many people too close.

When we were in Florida the private campground we stayed at removed half of the chairs around the pool and spaced them out. People did keep their distance, even when going in and out of the single gate. Later on their parent company closed all pools everywhere so they had to chain the gate.

The community rooms were closed and all campground-sponsored activities were canceled. Laundries were still open but showers were closed as were restrooms. Playgrounds had yellow tape around them.

On the way back, the campgrounds along the way kept their offices closed and their on-site stores closed to browsers but staff would still sell you something if you knew what you needed. Your reservation paperwork was put outside just like a night arrival. Someone met you in a golf cart and led you to your spot.

So yeah, it can be done. Campgrounds with lakes may have a more difficult time due to their size. Fortunately (or not), the weather around here won't be conducive to swimming for a while yet...

when i made our reservatios yesterday for our trip home tomorrow i asked all seven parks about their check-in procedure. six of them described a procedure similar as described above. when i asked the clerk at the sixth park in Oklahoma about their procedure she seemed surprised and asked what i meant. when i explained she said just to come on in to the office. sanity! seems that oklahoma bucked the trend to tank their economies.

I don't understand why some RV parks think you have to go inside to register. I had that happen and they said I had to come in to sign the paperwork so they could charge my card. I told them I got an email from my credit card company that the charge had been made while I was still on the phone with the park making the reservation at 10 am that morning. They said oh!

I didn't go in and they had a guy escort me with a golf cart. No contact registration has been done at RV parks since the beginning of RV parks. It's called night registration.

maybe it's just me and my suspicious mind but if i owned a park i would like to meet and see my customers face to face both to welcome them, show a little hospitality and answer questions as well as to judge whether i was going to have potential problems.

Judging a book by it's cover?

I've been helped and shown amazing generosity by tattooed and burly bikers that I would not have asked for directions to the nearest walmart... And screwed over or outright robbed by "friendly" southern or midwestern looking people or bible thumpers.

You never know who you are going to have problems with. If you are the recipient of money and they pay up front for a service, then you've already learned 90% of what you need to know without ever seeing them. Anything else isn't going to be known unless or until it becomes an issue. This is like restricting entry just b/c of the age of the coach. You aren't going to know anything from a number on a page. It is just prejudicial and rude.

nope...evaluating people involves a lot more than looks, clothing, tats, etc. surprised you don't know that.

Your post did not give much option for evaluating anything beyond what your eyes would show you, so that is what we have to work with in forming an opinion of what you meant.

And I stand by what I said - When renting a campsite to someone, a 5 minute interaction either on the phone or in person is not going to tell me ANYTHING about the content of their character beyond whether they have the money for the fee b/c they just paid it. Any of the "problems" that might pop up... I wouldn't know until or unless they actually did. Meeting them face to face won't tell me anything more than over the phone.

When we head back to PA from AZ, whenever that is, I guarantee you I'll be looking for places where I can avoid going inside to register. Why take the chance if you don't have to??

I guess the Ohio governor has been receiving Facebook messages regarding campgrounds. He is not a “what I say goes” type of guy so I am hoping he will look at this and reopen campgrounds when Retail is allowed to open May 12.

Governor DeWine was just asked that question on the daily call and he said he thought social distancing could be easy in a campground and also said the outdoor recreation working group would be working on the best practices in "the next several weeks". Hopefully this was just a mis-statement and not a goal. Summer in Ohio will be half-over in several weeks.

Did he say, people with leases (seasonal sites) are able to camp now? Hope I understood that correctly.

Yes, that actually was made part of the previous order revision a few weeks ago.

I just made reservations in Ohio for a June trip.
It was a one night stay.
I paid, got my site number.
We’re done. I don’t need to stop in the office. The campground map is on line pretty easy to find it.
April 8th I stayed in Gettysburg, PA with my new MH. Everything was by phone. They left a map outside for us. Easy Peasy. Nobody was Camping at the CG so I guess it was safe.
We had food and was just trying everything out in the MH making sure it all works. The wife even did a load of laundry in the washer. Cooked in the convection oven. Used the heat, used the AC.

May 7th we’re camping in NY State. I already paid for the weekend and know my site.
So we’re just going to drive in and set up. I don’t care if anything is open or not.
We can do house arrest in the MH just as good as at home.
