Has anybody mentioned the side effects of chloroquine? One of which is the potential for permanent blindness?

Look it up. It is true.

for a and inmny medical study

I have to be skeptical without actually seeing the methods and detailed results of the study.

40 patients is a miniscule amount of patients for any clinical study.

In many many years of practicing medicine I have never seen a study with a 100% "cure" rate.

It is unlikely in any study that correct and safe dosages could be determined right out of the starting gate.

It is unlikely anything will "cure" a severe viral infection in 6 days.

How far into the disease were his patients? It is possible they recovered on their own in spite of the drugs. And what does "cure" mean? Does it mean virus free? Does it mean symptom free? Does it mean you can no longer infect others? To most physicians "cure" means all 3.

These are antibacterial and anti parasite drugs not antivirals and as ichytoe mentioned, after decades of rigorous research no cure has been found for a coronavirus.

If these drugs have any actual benefit I suspect it is in fighting the additional bacterial lung infections that follow a Covid 19 infection or they mitigate symptoms and shorten the symptomatic period just like tamiflu and antibiotics do for influenza.

Not trying to rain on something that may be promising but there are more reasons to be doubtful about this than hopeful. I hope I am wrong.

As Ichytoe mentioned after de ades of study there is no cure for a corona virus

Remdesivir and chloroquine are not the same drug.
Remdesivir is an anti Ebola drug (didn't work very well).
Chloroquine is an anti malarial drug.
They are both being looked at separately.

Found this article on Remdesivir and a couple other drugs.

I discovered tonight I was completely wrong about that, I apologize. Your link is very informative, thanks.
I read this tonight: https://www.bbc.com/news/health-51665497 about drug testing.

What is chloroquine and why is it considered a promising potential treatment for C-19

Chloroquine has some very serious side effects.

“China, where the deadly pathogen first emerged in December, recommended the decades-old malaria drug chloroquine to treat infected patients in guidelines issued in February after seeing encouraging results in clinical trials. But within days, it cautioned doctors and health officials about the drug’s lethal side effects and rolled back its usage”

Couple guys over on a car forum have taken it. One takes it daily, 400mg. Says yes it can cause retina problems as a side effect. Thus they check his eyes every 6 months. He has had no problems.
The other was in the Army back in the '80s and '90s. Said they had to take it before going on tropical deployments. 2 weeks before and then during deployments. Said he has taken it a bunch, no side effects.
Every drug has side effects if you actually read the inserts you get with a prescription.

On another note, I just watch a Fox Business show where they showed that China actually tried to buy the rights to Remdesivir from Gilead (the inventor).
I wonder why....

Most drugs have some kind of side effect. At least Chloroquine has been in use for a long time and doctors should have a reasonable idea of the upper limits for dosage. Always a possibility that the drug will have new side effects with this specific virus. FWIW, my SIL takes it for Lupus. She was kidding earlier that she was willing to sell it for $50 a pill.
