35MB Overhead Squeaks
I have been unsuccessfully on the hunt for the source of some persistent and worsening squeaks coming from somewhere in the forward overhead/headliner/windshield area in our 2022 Valencia. I have removed the small overhead storage bins and searched (with help)while driving to no avail. I have attempted to tighten the fasteners that are visible, but haven’t found the right spot yet.
On my previous class A, I found that most of the squeaks came from the fiberglass/metal seam where the dash met the interior front cap, and was able to limit them by tightening the hardware and lubing with a small amount of food grade lubricant, where necessary. I can’t seem to locate the offending connections/contact in this rig.
Has anyone experienced such squeaks, and had any luck in eliminating/lessening them?
Thanks in advance…

Been there, solved that! I have a Valencia also and found that the squeaks came from thin sheet metal rubbing together above the cab area.
Here’s the fix, which came from someone on the Renegade Facebook page:
Remove the two sunglass holders. They simply pull out. Remove the CB holder plate (it’s screwed in).
Behind those areas are 4-6 pairs of metal humps that are fastened together. Each pair is fastened in the middle, but the areas right next to the fastener can rub together, thus the squeaking.
The fix is to put shims between the humps, next to the fasteners. All you need is thin (very thin) plastic, 1 inch x 2 inch (or whatever small size will fit). I used a flathead screwdriver, inserted that between the humps to create a little space, and inserted a shim. Repeat for each pair of humps.
Thousands of miles now and no more squeaking.
My explanation of “humps” will make sense once you see the area. Simply pull out one of the sunglass holders and look behind if with a flashlight. You’ll see exactly what I’m talking about.

Thanks for your reply drewtk, I know exactly what you’re talking about when referring to the formed metal “humps”, as I have had the sunglass holders out while looking for potential sources of squeaks.
I will be following through with the shims this week, and I am looking forward to getting those squeaks silenced. The rest of the rig is solid, very few noises other than the overhead.
I am very appreciative for your response, thanks again for sharing your experience!

I have also been trying to track down overhead squeaking (it seems to be getting better the more miles we drive, or maybe I just tune it out more). When I first purchased it was really bad from the front corner. The dealer was able to take apart the a-pillar and bend some of the metal away and that fixed that specific issue. Now I am left with what sounds like 2 balloons rubbing together.
I will try the shims fix to see if that helps, but it seems like the insulation styrafoam rubbing against the fiberglass.

So far, I have been successful with quieting the majority of the squeaks located in the overhead, closest to the windshield, and now have just a few in the corners. It seems like the remaining squeaks are either in the upper “A” post areas, or in the overhead closer to the driver/passenger seats.
I am going to try to get a few shims in place during our current trip, and see how that works.
Thanks again for the suggestions, I think we are on the right path to a more peaceful ride…

Larry - Glad to hear the shims are helping. We're on a trip right now and I'm hearing a few new squeaks over bumpy roads. Not frequent and nothing like before I shimmed the areas I mentioned above. I'm going to look in the overhead bin areas again to locate any other potential areas of rubbing.
Either way, shimming has cut the squeaking noise way way way down in my Valencia.

We had a few of the squeaks return on our most recent trip as well, so on a recent visit to SportTruck, I left the two plastic bins out, along with the center trim and plate. I focused on the areas between the headliner and metal structure, and found some success with some small towels to apply a little pressure between the two surfaces. Seems to work well, so I am replacing the small towel pieces with some open cell packing materials.
We leave for a short trip on Friday, so I will leave everything open again to see how this works.

Overdue Update
The previous efforts did result in decreased squeaking, but some still persisted.
I eventually removed the wood trim that covers the portion of the cab/bunk cut away. There, I noticed the staples that secure the headliner to the 1/4” plywood backing were long enough to make light contact with the interior metal reinforcement for the cab roof. I bent the staple tails tight to the wood, then used material to isolate the wood from the metal. I also put some isolating lubricant tape between the large rubber gasket and inside portion of the roof structure.
After close to 1000 miles on Arizona’s crappy roads and highways, the cab is a totally different environment regarding sound, it’s extremely quiet and enjoyable to drive, as it should be.
