Classic Fuel Milage DD16

Wondering what to expect for milage on a 45’ Classic with DD16/Allison combo? Our current 2018 Verona with the 8.9L Cummins/Allison seems to get 7-8 MPG no matter what I tow or how I drive, only wind seems to make it worse.

While I dont have the DD 16, my Classic is also 45' and probably close to the same weight as yours. I have the ISX15 with an Eaton 13 speed. I have had my 2014 for two years now and have driven 20,000 miles. When I purchased it , it only had 9,000 miles on it. My first 10,000 miles I averaged around 6.5 mpg. The second 10,000 my average has gone up to 7 and sometimes 7.2. I usually travel down the interstate at about 72 mph. I do believe there is a break-in factor for these big diesel motors. I tow a '99 Wrangler that weighs about 3200 lbs. Towing does not seem to affect mileage, especially only 3,200 lbs. I live in the Southwest and frequently go up and down real mountain roads. Like you, the only noticeable factor affecting mpg is either a tail or head wind. Your big classic will be rock steady going down the road, with little or no push from crosswinds or passing big trucks. Interested to hear what your mileage is.

We have a 2022 Ikon with a DD16 and a Allison transmission. Only 4700 miles on it so far. But we're averaging 7 to 7.2 doing 70 to 72 MPH.

How you drive it will make all the difference in the world . If you drive like there is an egg between your foot and the fuel peddle ,do 60 down the highway ? You should easily get/average 8+ per gallon . (unless you stay in the mountains ) If it don't matter if you are doing 60 or 70 slow or fast starts and getting the same mpg ? You have something wrong ,more than likely the intercooler is leaking . If you have satellite radio. Check out Kevin Rutherford on the trucking channel . He has all types of "tricks" that help owner operators of big rigs get great mileage . Same principal for MH . I retired 2 years ago from trucking . My last 7 years running from Greensboro to the NC coast 30K empty averaging about 60K+ loaded (80K max) . I got average 7 mpg . I was real easy taking off and ran 67 mph highway . If i was paying for the fuel ? I would of run 60 ,bet i would of average 8+ mpg

Thanks all, I will be pretty happy with 7-8 mpg I drive 65-70 most of the time... so looks like range will be around 700-800 miles and leave 100 or so reserve. 120 x 8 = 960 or 120 x 7 = 840

I had a 2022 Ikon with the DD16 and AllisonTRV4000. I mainly stayed in the 7-7.5 mpg range. I put 21,000 miles on it in about4 months and after about 5000 miles it stayed pretty close to what it did at the end.

I have about 4K miles on the coach now, my fuel MPG average by the computer is about 6 MPG, but I have been pulling lots of hills since leaving Gilbert AZ and up through I17 Flagstaff, then onto Lake Powell and now at Bryce Canyon.

On the fuel gauge (this is the new all digital dash) I went about 400 Miles and the gauge read just below 14 tank (120 gallon tank). I don't think I used 90 gallons yet, so when this thing hits the red reserve how much fuel is left in the tank? I need to time it when I hit the reserve and then fill all the way up...just wondering what others are seeing with the tank level, range and MPG.

Thank you!

We now have 5,200 miles on ours. For the first 3,450 miles we only had performance mode on our DT12 transmission and our average was 7.9mpg, we rarely go over 65mph.
At 3,450 miles we had the transmission flashed to give us Economy Mode and eCoast, we have averaged 8.5mpg since then, again at 65mph.

As far as the fuel gauge goes we have fueled up when the low fuel light came on and only got 85 gallons in, filling it to the brim. We have driven 100 miles after the low fuel light came on, showing empty on gauge and it only took 95 gallons filling it to the brim. Not sure how much of the fuel that is left is usable and I am not willing to test it! I just figure that when the low fuel light come on I start looking for a fuel stop and I can go 100 miles before I start to worry.

Not completely irrelevant. Saw an Explorer 38 for sale on RVtrader. Screen shot of the dash showed 9.1mpg.

9.1 !! Whoa!

So, this AM Bryce Canyon UT to SLC I reset my mileage and doing 65-75 all the way got 8 MPG mix of hills and flat wind was not too bad was pretty impressed! I see now that keeping 65 MPH equals about 1400 RPM and good mileage, at 75 it’s 1850 RPM and 6-7 MPG
