Add portable AC ?

Got a Scout Yoho on order. Plan to use it Spring/Fall on local fishing trips.

But if I want to hit some lakes in the dead of summer, it would be borderline too hot/humid to be comfortable at night.

Most of my trips would be to a campsite with electric. So I was thinking a portable AC might make sense.

Anyone have advice on the subject?

If you mean the kind that looks like a dehumidifier and blows air out the window, I don't like them. I'd do whatever it takes to find the smallest window unit you can and mount it in a piece of plywood to easily install in a window. I wouldn't want to be giving up floor space inside a truck camper to a portable A/C and still dealing with the hose.

I'm thinking something along these lines. Have not done any research, but thinking it would be the easiest to use. I have a 2200 Honda generator if I really needed to use it dry camping.

You have to get the hot air out of the camper so it has to have a hose to hook up in a window. Also it will have condensate to keep emptied unless you have a way to drain it outside.

I've done it; I made a small plate with a hose connection and opened the pass through window and put it there. I also made a small stand to allow the condensate to gravity feed.

I have three at home that I use when I don't want to run the whole house A/C. They work great but, as others have mentioned, you will have to run a hose out a window to exhaust the hot air. I made a plexiglass adapter to hook the hose up to and fit into the open window space. There are also some other things to look for when making this purchase:

1) Buy one that is self dehydrating meaning, no drain hose to drain the condensate. All three of mine are self dehydrating and work great.
2) These come in single or double hose, one exhaust and one intake. I have one double hose that I did take with me on a camping trip where I knew it was going to be over 110 F and even though it worked great, the double hose is a pain in the butt octopus that takes up a lot of space and really needs a window close to it.
3) Size- You will need to consider how much floor space you want to give up for the unit. I have a small Black and Decker 8,000btu in my office and it has a very small footprint. I don't know if that small of a unit will cool your new camper down enough so something to think about.

Last, does your new camper have a roof ac option, or does it come prewired for one? In my opinion, a roof unit is the best choice, takes no space and will probably do the best job but I will admit, the portable units are much quieter.

Good Luck with your decisions and Safe Travels!

Single hose portable ACs take cooled air from inside and ehxaust it outside. That causes un cooled outside air to come in cracks, holes and seals.

A two hose unit uses outside air to cool the evaporator and send it back outside. The inside air is re cooled over and over making it more efficient.

A window unit keeps the inside and outside air seperate too.
