Atwood 1733 Range/Oven Thermocouple alternative - 2008 Northern Lite 10-2

Hi all!

I recently went through changing out the thermocouple in the oven/range in the camper because I want to make cookies while camping damnit. Stock ones are no longer available so I found another solution and it worked out well. Thought I would share.

The thread on the 57274 thermocouple is M8 x 1 and it is supposed to put out 30mv.

When I got mine out, I was able to generate 22mv when I got the flame just right. Apparently this is not enough. I was a little unsure at this point if the TC was the culprit because 22 is close to 30, the butane lighter not as hot as propane, maybeee its good...??? , but I went ahead anyway.

The 57274 is the stock unit and they are not available new because production has apparently stopped. Ebay was maybe promising something but I didn't trust it. Local hardware stores all had standard SAE sizes for home appliances. I needed an alternative that would fit, so to amazon I went.

After hours of hemming and hawing I settled on this unit:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074DQGR18...fed_asin_title

You'll see that the hot end of the new TC is also M8x1, which is too big to fit through the stock mounting bracket on the pilot assembly, which is designed for a 5mm diameter TC.

From here, pull the old TC out, pull out the collar /retainer that holds the TC. Then run a 5/16" (almost 8mm) drill through the remaining hole in the bracket. You will remove a miniscule amount of material, but what you gain is the ability to replace your TC with one off the shelf! Now your M8x1 should fit perfectly.

The rest is simple reinstallation.

Anyways, this fixed it for me! Hope you can gain something here

Careful*** with the pilot light gas line. I sheared mine off when loosening the flare fitting at the pilot assembly end. I'd use penetrating oil next time and let it sit overnight before trying the nut. The tube is super weak and junk / corrosion builds up over time in the oven, with hot/cold cycles etc. The compression nut had sort of welded itself to the back end of the mushroom at the end of the tube, and I snapped it right off. JB weld solved it for me, but would have been nice to avoid.

Pilot gas line flare nuts: 10mm nut
TC at solenoid end: m8 x1, 8mm nut.
Length of copper "tube" for TC: 36"
Length of TC itself: 2".
Diameter stock TC at mounting location: 5mm
No, 22mv is not enough.

Here is the owners manual page that matters, for the range.
And a drawing of the pilot gas line situation.

Ill document better next time.

Got it!
