Is my pick-up big enough for a Cirrus 720 or Lance 825?

Thanks in advance for your input! I recognize the importance of this forum as a resource for information.

I am considering the purchase of a truck camper for my 2018 GMC Sierra double cab. It is equipped with the enhanced trailering package so I could tow a small fifth wheel trailer. The rated bed capacity is over 2200 pounds yet the Truck Camper capacity sticker in the glove compartment says 1282 pounds.

The Lance RV website suggests that the model 825 works for half ton pickups. Max weight is 2100 pounds with all options on the 825. Comparing the Lance to the NuCamp Cirrus 720, it is the same.
I found a Cirrus 720 posted locally so I asked the seller about the capacity of his Ram 2500 short bed. His response was that he would not put it on any half ton pickup.

Should I look for a lighter truck camper, enhance the suspension of my pick-up or get a heavier pick-up?

IMHO Roadyacht I'd say as long as you have 'leaf' and not coil springs on the rear axle you have a workable situation.
FWIW here are some related fun facts you can use for reference. . .

* The payload of my SRW 2016 RAM 3500 is 3705 Lb.
* The Truck's camper certification says 1301 Lb. max permissible!
* My camper's weight sticker says 2910 Lb. "as equipped"
* The actual scale weight of the camper is 3700 Lb. (4000+ if I load it heavy).
* My GVWR is 11,700 Lb.
* My CAT scale ticket says 12,340 Lb.

By the numbers my rig is a rolling death trap! (and I assume DOT illegal).
However, it seems to sit, handle, ride, and brake, okay.

BTW, is your 2018 GMC Sierra double cab a 1500, 2500, or 3500?

truck campers are extremely top heavy and if you have a 1500/150 truck you likely have a soft suspension that can make for an unstable setup in uneaven terrain and windy conditions. There is always the possibility to install aftermarket leafs, airbags, shocks, etc. but I doubt you will ever be satisfied or safe for that matter. Be aware that the weight sticker on the truck camper does not include water, propane, tie down brackets, supplies, clothes, food, dishes, etc.

When we needed to buy a new truck in '17 we were surprised that similar equipped 3500 series trucks were ~$6,000 cdn. more expensive than 5500 trucks which made the decision a no brainer and as long as there is sufficient weight on the back I don't feel the need for a suspension modification, the ride quality and handling with the camper loaded couldn't be better. IMO, anyone looking to buy a new truck to carry a heavy camper should at least explore the cab chassis category.

My shortbed 2016 Ram 3500 was $70,000-US. At the same dealership I could have bought a new crew-cab Ram 4500 landscapers dump-truck complet with underbody tool bins for $59,000.

My next truck will be a dually with a relatively small non-slide camper on the back. I'm tired of fighting the payload demons with my current rig.

IMHO any slide-in camper needs at least a 3500 class SRW truck as a starting point, however...
Plenty of people have upgraded their light trucks to carry a heavy load.

There are lots of suspension modification products on the market for that purpose.
Airbags are a favorite amongst truck camper people.
They are used to force an overloaded vehicle to sit level and appear to not be overloaded.

Having the proper vehicle for the job is the only correct way to do it but with the truck market being ridiculous right now your only option might be to buy the camper, do the airbag trick, and plan on getting a 3500 soon as the market shapes up.

Max trailer....10,700# = 1600# Tongue weight (TT) or 2350# Pin Weight (FW)
Both are NOT reasonable weights on a 1500 Short bed

Now as to Campers....rated bed capacity is over 2200 pounds yet the Truck Camper capacity sticker in the glove compartment says 1282 pounds.
Payload of 2200 is total for ALL passengers, Stuff inside Cab, Stuff in Bed, Hitch, Tongue weight etc
Camper capacity of 1282 subtracted from Payload leaves 918 for ALL Passengers, stuff inside cab

That is why two different ratings.......
*which are based on that enhanced tow package

Lighter camper for that 1500 short bed......
