I don’t know any of the answers to the very good questions that you asked. I’m hoping to find out the answers with you!

I'm new too. Just purchased an Arctic Fox 865 in late January. My auto insurance company (Amica) would not let me insure the camper as cargo under the truck policy, I think due to the it's value. They required a separate policy for the camper. Luckily, they gave me a policy that renews in about a month, so I'm also interested in the responses that you receive which may give the most economical way to fully insure the truck and camper (on or off the truck), whether it's separate policies or one policy. In one month I need to decide to renew or keep what I've got for coverage.

I'm confident that you can be towed with the camper installed.

My answers:
1. State Farm for our Toyota truck, Honda CRV, John Deere tractor, barn, diesel pusher coach, house and liability on the farm land. Plus a 1 million umbrella policy (actually this umbrella made my total insurance cost bill go down).
2. State Farm on the coach and toad. We lost our last motorhome, shed, shrubbery and minor damage to our home to a fire. They paid for everything.
3. Self insured. (means I break it I fix it)
4. State Farm for roadside assistance. Been towed 3 times in 21 years, and my out of pocket cost was $0 (except for the $6.70 per year cost for the roadside assistance). I did have to disconnect the toad. I'm not sure about a camper. Ask your insurance rep.
5. Everything we have is insured with State Farm except for our pets!

1. Bid it out to the major ins companies and see who comes back with the best rates and coverage.
2. Most carriers will want you to have a separate policy for the camper. My bid from State Farm did not. The agent stated my fifth wheel would be covered as part of my truck's auto policy. That makes me a bit nervous.
3. Meh. Just avoid the dealer and use an independent mobile service to fix whatever you can't fix yourself.
4. Be careful with this one. AAA for example, has multiple tiers of roadside assistance and many of those tiers do NOT include towing or somehow transporting your RV. Be sure to ask. GoodSam tends to have good coverage for these kind of things.
5. State Farm's quote as I stated above, considers the truck and whatever is attached to it as one covered item. That may or may not work to your advantage.

You know you can change ins company at any time. yeah it's a bit easier at renewal time but it can be done anytime, done it a few times.

1. Get quotes from different carriers and compare coverage. When comparing quotes, make sure you're comparing apples to apples in terms of coverage (liability limits, comp/collision deductibles, personal property, medical, etc.).

2. If you insure your camper (via your tow vehicle policy) as something akin to a "camper shell" or as "cargo", I'd make sure it specifies the make/model/year/VIN of the camper somewhere on the policy. If not, coverage could be questionable---especially in a total loss situation. If you're carrying a newer truck camper, I'd highly recommend a standalone policy.

Ref standalone policies, some carriers offer new, replacement coverage (up to 5 model years old) in the event of a total loss, some don't. Replacement coverage is a big plus.

As a side note, your tow vehicle's liability coverage will typically cover any liability issues involving the truck camper while it attached to the truck. Once the truck camper is detached from the truck, your TV's liability coverage ceases to cover the truck camper. When the truck camper is detached (on vacation away from home), your home owner's liability insurance may (or may not) cover any liability issues involving your truck camper. Again, best to have a standalone policy to remove all doubt.

3. Good Sam and other 3rd party companies offer insurance coverage for most of the appliances found on RV's. FYI, insurance for "defective" roof, walls, main structure, etc. (not accident related) is almost impossible to find. Read the fine print when you see or hear claims that they "cover everything"---they rarely (if ever) do.

4. With the proper tow truck, your camper won't have to be removed. However, if the "proper" tow truck is not available your truck and camper may have to be towed/removed from the scene separately. FYI, not all tow companies have the expertise or equipment to properly haul/remove a stationary/detached truck camper. It is what it is.

5. Se item number #2.

Lastly, just because your insurance agent says you're covered, doesn't make it so. Read your policy!!

Your standard auto insurance policy (at least in Cali) covers camper as long as it's mounted to your truck. Whatever your deductible is would apply. I store my camper on the side of my driveway and since my neighbor is a renter and could possible be more prone to having a fire I Have a separate policy for $292.76 annually and has a $500 deductible and a 30k value through Progressive.

When I take possession of my new camper, I will call my insurance gal and give her the numbers and she adds it onto my Farmers bill. Forget the exact quote, but it was no big deal.

One thing to note make sure you get insurance and proof asap. A few years ago I had a trailer and sold it knowing I was going to get another within that next week. So trailer was picked out waiting for me to sell mine I called my agent with the new VIN and was actually going to buy it the next day. Yes I technically had insurance on something I didn't own for 12 hrs. Everything was done for ins. Get the new trailer gave them my agent info as they wanted to make sure it was insurad they were happy I was broke now went home and enjoyed life. 2-4 months latter I get this cryptic letter from the bank ins verification center about not having RV ins, I said yes I do here is the info, I called my agent to verify yup paid in full 12 months, verified VIN all was good. Then I get this letter and new payment plan for my RV, I was given imposed ins on the RV at about 300 a month, I call them ask WT? is going on they said ok we will verify. Again came the you don't have insurance claim.
So I called my ins directly they verified I had coverage then I put them on hold and called the bank verifiers... well come to find out because I stopped and started basically the same day the new unit was listed as a second unit on page 2 of the coverage page and every time they verified they only went to page 1. I think it was a human the last go around that solved the issue.
So in the end I got all my money refunded and all was good but if I didn't have INS the imposed stuff is stupid expensive, so if you get a letter like that do yourself a favor and hand hold both parties until they figure out the info they need ASAP and dont' trust they can figure it out on there own. And no an ins card wasn't going to work at that point as they wanted to verify loss payee and start date. We even joked about having coverage before I even officially signed documents.
