Truck roof/camper height
Hi, newbie question, we a an older jayco sportsman truck camper and was wondering if anyone would know what the recommended height between the roof and the overhang of the camper should be. I see some manufacturers recommend 1-1/2" to 6" so I didn't know if it is specific to the manufacturer. Thank you for the help.

If it helps, most camper manufacturers have 4' between the camper bottom and the underside of the cabover to clear full sized truck cabs.

i wouldn’t want less than 2”, with a max of 7”. Mine has 3”. Like bedlam says the new ones i have looked at 4’ seems pretty standard.

I also have older camper of the Wolverine model. When doing a refit to a newer truck 2008 Chev. 2500, I did not like the clearance between he cab roof and the bottom of the overhang so I installed treated 2x4a with the 4" side vertically to increase the clearance between the cab and camper. Originally only 2x3. Have since made 3 trips west for about 10k miles with no trouble.

From what I have read multiple times on different forums (no personal experience however) is that Fords have the tallest cabs, followed by Dodge/RAMs, and Chevy/GMC have the lowest cabs. So your clearance problem is magnified by the truck you own. I have read where people had problems with the cab over touching the roof of the cab sometimes, and they doubled up on those thick rubber horse mats, or they added a couple of sheets of treated 3/4 plywood.
Trade trucks? JK.

Well fortunate for me (lol) i have Reese 5th wheel rails in my bed so I built it up with hard insulation board then a 3/8 inch rubber bed mat, still wasn't happy with the clearance then added a sheet of 8x4 1/2 plywood on top of the insulation board then the rubber bed mat and got it just right about 4 inches clearance. Just got home from a 4,200 mile trip and everything went great. Besides losing a lens cover on front marker lamp on the old Lance 1030 wife and I picked up for cheap. Lost it on the Wash Board Highway of Washington. Lost another on the way back from Key West to Key Largo! ugh! Ordered 6 Bargman lens covers from Amazon. Waiting for me when we got home. (Mass to Key West) this pic is from Myrtle Beach State Park.

I’n my 40 years of experience I’ve always been good with 2-3 inches. If you have cab lights go 2-3 inches above those. Less height equals less wind resistance which equals better handling and fuel economy
