Found On Road Dead

Bummer. At least he kept the cab sunny side up. For as much as those trucks cost, FORD should clean up his spilled coffee and give him a new truck.

Hmmmm, the driver is still seated in the truck. Is that photo from a reliable source?

It’s very possible.
That’s a decent size looking box trailer. If he had a hitch extension in to clear the truck camper, which he would of had to have, with no weight bars on, plus the load of the truck camper itself.

Probably never took the class on tongue weight. Good thing he's off the road. Don't think insurance will cover this one, and no Ford does not owe him a truck the Police owe him a whole book of tickets. Reminds me of a saying, "I made it idiot proof, but they built a better idiot."

Maybe the camper tie downs were mounted to the frame in such a way the frame was weakened. Notice how the bend/break is in-line with the mounts.

He was very lucky he/she didn't spill the "beans". Think on an interstate at 70 and having that happen.

I too would guess that it was in some way related to the trailer weight and the extension needed to attach the trailer.

I had a similar thing happen to me with our '89 W250 Dodge and 11.5' Caribou a few years after towing a 24' 10' high enclosed trailer from the east coast to the west coast with the camper on. It was just too much for the truck frame to manage. When we got back to OR our son bounced on the hitch with the trailer mounted and I could watch the truck bend along the front of the bed. A few years later in WV I entered a busy highway going up hill from a start and the camper raised up and didn't come back down. I pulled off at the first wide spot and the only thing holding the frame together was the bottom rail. After walking to a nearby tractor supply and getting some adequate "C" clamps I pulled the frame together, limped to my uncles house, took the camper off, went to another uncles house, pulled the bed and got a friend with a portable welder to do the repairs. It had broken just ahead of the front rear spring hanger. After welding and adding some reinforcements it was good for many more years of camper hauling, but no more large trailers. I did check for cracks in that area for several years afterwards before starting our OR-WV trip.

Fortunate indeed, spilled coffee was probably the least of their worries.

Here's another one:

Different truck, same camper and trailer. What little info I've been able to find is it's the same guy both times. And if you look closely at the trailer hitch area, there is no weight distribution hitch in use!! It's no wonder the frame broke.

I also dug up a photo of a 2017 Ford F350 frame and it's clear where the failure point is: The cab part of the frame meets the bed part of the frame and there's a bit of an overlap where the two meet. Plus the whole frame is C-channel, not fully boxed like RAM and GM use.

Oh and here's a link a friend sent:

This is the guy in the newer truck, already with it busted, tooling down the street with his hazards on.

The closer I look at the pic I posted, the more it looks like he had the tongue of the trailer extended to fit a regular ball holder in his factory hitch. So it's not a Torklift SuperHitch / SuperTruss setup either; not that it would have matter, since the weak point is still obviously the frame.

Also, note that the trailer tongue is still perpendicular to the ground; if he had an actual hitch extension in place, it would have dug into the ground, or bent. Instead, you can actually see the ball holder under there.

Sigh. What an idiot to end up doing it TWICE.

Welded tie down points to the frame weakened both those trucks. Alberta Coal Rollers on Facebook

Well, that's assuming they're welded on. The Torklift tie downs, which look a lot like the ones in the picture, are purely bolt-on.

BUT, given the guy's stupidity, you may very well be right.
