Computer scam reply

We just got one of those calls that have folks claiming to be doing contract work for Microsoft and their task is addressing "error codes" reported from our computer.

We got one some time ago and played along as they showed me the files causing the issues and when they demanded money to fix it I told them I was not authorized so they actually sent me a quote to seek approval.

Later confirmed the files were standard back end files that windows creates to do things and they needed to be there.

The guy was pushy as he stated my computer was at risk and simply would not stop...We were just seeing where they would go.

Back to today...

Same sort of story by someone who English is not first language and after I asked how they determined we had error codes ( let him talk for awhile) I stated there must be a mistake then he explained that is part of how the errors work...

So I then tell him we are an "Apple office" and there are zero devices using anything Microsoft. ..

Line went dead....

Also note the phone here is only a couple years assigned to us and previous folks have lots of legal issues so we get interesting messages on our machine too.

Important to remember ; Microsoft will NEVER phone you , as a user requiring help , you must contact them .
That way you can be sure who your dealing with , haven't had the " Windows Error team" scam phone call for a while ; guess I'm probably due .

Get these calls all the time.

My first question to them is which computer? Their response is "What do you mean?" I explain that we have 6 different computers and if they can tell me which one is the one they want to fix I'll talk the them. The conversation pretty much stops there.

I we get get a number of calls in the course of a month I'll jot down the number and report it to the FCC website.

I dis just sign back up for Call Blocking, hope it works as we get more of the robo calls then normal calls.

In one day I had 17 (YES, that many) calls in one day from the same number for the same scam. Every one of them were "language challenged" individuals.

Oh great, now this in addition to the final call I got from the IRS about being sued unless I call the number they left......WHICH has a non-USA country code.

But on the other hand the government in another country has money they want to give me, so after I give them my account number they can deposit it, I can retire

So sad that some people fall for this stuff

So, can we just tell the IRS Scammers to contact that "foreign government" to collect that money they want to give me and drop the "law suit" they are threatening?

I've played along to those calls as well. Have them describe to me what I should be seeing instead of me telling them. I let them tell me what to do next...all the while going 'uh huh, got it , right...', until I get tired and finally tell them I've been in the industry for 25 years, have worked with Microsoft as well as security and enterprise software...and oh yeah, I own Macs now, not Windows systems.

After all that, I've even had one guy tell me to hold while he transferred me to the Apple dept.

Now my wife hands me her phone when they call her...

Went through the call for a while and then finally told the guy. I have not had a computer for years.

Unix
Fortran
Cobol

Many operating systems to toss out.

Or yiu could state you are not allowed to use computers as part of your sentence for scamming others by impersonating tech support and tell them they are doing it wrong...

Remember Microsoft will never call you. The IRS will never call you and the Lottery will not call you.

Ummm...

Fortran and COBOL are programming languages, not operating systems.

Just saying...
