My baby crib was painted with lead paint and I am sure I chewed on a lot of it.

Our home wood work was painted with lead paint.

We had a lot of asbestos in flooring, ceiling, and plumbing.

I drank water out of a black rubber hose. I did learn to flush the hose first to take the bad taste out.

I learned to ride a bicycle and continued to ride it with out a helmet.

I played in playgrounds with out shavings or sawdust under the slides or merry-go-rounds.

I grew up next to a river with 600' of unfenced frontage. I fished and played by the river unsupervised for 15 years.

Now according to todays standards I should of died from to much ingested lead, got poisoned by using a non white hose, been killed or maimed by hitting the unprotected hard ground, had major head damage or death from lack of a helmet while bicycle riding, or drowned falling into the river. When my DW gets mad at me (hardly ever) she blames the lead for damage to my brain.

What are your thoughts?

If a smoker lives to be 100 is smoking safe?

It wasn't safe for those that breathed his second hand smoke.

In the '30s, '40s, '50s, what did "pasturized" mean? Gardens were thouroghly(sp?) mulched with Ol' Bossie's stuff. How did we survive?

jfb, They still use Bossie's old stuff on the farms. I have to laugh everytime I drive past a small VFW hall here in Mich. Apparently there was a feud between the VFW & the farmer because he has built his manure pile right next to their parking lot which is only about 25' from their door. That is just a little South of where I live.

I too was raised under all these circumstances including second hand smoke from my mother and father and my smoking from the age of 12 to 2003 age 51. Thats 39 years of smoking for those who cannot do math. I am in good health doctors find nothing wrong with my blood, my lungs, or anything else for that matter. So please tell me why I survived? I dont advocate smoking for anyone its a nasty habit and I am very glad I quit.

Some people are immune to second hand smoke some are not.
I will be happy when they ban smoking period.

Yup Mom and Dad were heavy smokers, and I remember eating a few Mothballs when I was small,thinking it was candy.You never forget that taste. I struggle with the smoking thing,I agree its nasty and I cant stand the smell,just real hard to quit for good.

Stevegeorgetown, I don' know what happens on your side of the border; but, here it is a political issue and not a health issue. Let, face it money talks and there is one pile of money at stake here, i.e. the grower, the cigarette company, the wholesaler, the retailer, oh and lest we forget the government which imposes and collects significant taxes. I too am a reformed smoker and have been for 15 years now. Even though several states have made great strides in banning smoking in public places I would not count on any such ban at the federal level for many yearsto come.

On this side of the border we find it much easier to talk the talk on issues such as this than to actually walk the walk. Ken, '04 DSDP....

I know smoking cant be banned but it would be nice if non smokers didnt have to breathe it in.

It is banned in all public areas in Canada including casinos and I have to say that on our recent trip to Nevada when I walked into a casino the smoke was unbearable.

It's amazing...I can sit by the campfire for hours and have no problems with the smoke. If I walk in to a bar long enough to see if the smoke is too bad to stay or not, I have all kinds of problems. My Mom smoked when I was a kid but I have never smoke a cigarette in my life.

The more that smoking is being banned in public places it wont be long before it will be one of those luxury items for people. What I mean there is like a good cigar or great pipe tobacco. Its rarely used and usually only in ones home or those rare richy rich locations that allow it. In Utah they have banned it in parks, all businesses including bars and in some cities even on the streets. There are a couple of towns that banned its use in the town and there were issues cuz of home owners who smoked. I quit cuz my wife dont smoke and I felt at our age she did not deserve to have me around her stinking of smoke and having to breath the second hand smoke.
