I can relate to most of these but if you live elsewhere, you may not understand how it really is up here in the normally frozen tundra

If you consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through 36 inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping that the food will swim by, you might live in Upstate New York.

If you're proud that your region makes the national news 96 nights a year because Saranac Lake is the coldest spot in the nation, and Syracuse gets more snow than any other major city in the US , you might live in Upstate NY.

If your local Dairy Queen is closed from October through May, you might live in Upstate New York .

If you get 131 inches of snow in a week and you comment that 'winter's finally here,' you might live near Oswego in Upstate New York.

If you instinctively walk like a penguin for six months out of the year, you might live, bundled up, in Upstate New York.

If someone in a Home Depot store offers you assistance, and they don't work there, you might live in Upstate NY.

If you have worn shorts and a parka on the same day, you might live in Upstate New York.

If you have had a lengthy phone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number, you might live in Upstate New York.

YOU KNOW YOU ARE A TRUE UPSTATE NEW YORKER WHEN:

'Vacation' means going south past Albany or Syracuse for the weekend.

You measure distance in hours.

You know several people who have hit a deer - more than once.I can relate to that one!!

You often switch from 'heat' to 'A/C' in the same day and back again. We did that in the 5er yesterday

You can drive 65 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard without flinching.

You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked.

You carry jumper cables in your car and your girlfriend/wife knows how to use them.

You design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit.

Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow.

You know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter, and road construction.

You can identify a southern or eastern NY accent.

Your neighbor throws a party to celebrate his new shed.

You go out for a fish fry every Friday.

Your 4th of July picnic was moved indoors due to frost.

You have more miles on your snow blower than your car.

You find 10 degrees 'a little chilly.' And 55 is shorts weather.

You actually understand these jokes, and you forward them to all your Upstate New York friends and to those who used to live here and left(chickens).

Was a dispute on exactly where the Minnesota Iowa state line was and some might not be in the state they thought they was.

When interviewed one of the locals was asked which her preferred his answer was Iowa as he was tired of the Minnesota winters.

BTW I have seen "shorts and a parka" at the same time.

My DW and I just sat here and laughed. We spent our working careers in Niagara County and there is so much truth in those statement! Upstate and western New Yorkers are a special breed!

Many of those apply to your neighbor to the east, Vermont!

To add on (and it happened this May), you know you live in VT when you can have accumulating snow and record heat in the same week.

I've done both MN and upstate NY in less than a week.

I was in Rochester MN and was set to drive to VT. ( guess I did three of the states mentioned). Was supposed to leave on a Monday, got snowed in on a farm just south of Rochester on Friday night and the plows didn't get to us until late Sunday. So left for VT on Tuesday. Thursday I got snowed in at a Holiday Inn in Rochester NY. Left there early Saturday. Was going to check in at work site on Monday am but car was buried in snow in parking lot.
Gotta love the snow belt.

March 1970 was when I made the run to VT. 1972 I moved to CA.

Jeff used 95% of the same jokes when talking about being a Canadian .

11 months of winter and one month of poor snowmobiling .

BTW : My wife DOES know how to use jumper cables.

Now to change my access code again , so she never sees this .

Some things are just too funny to not be true. My wife also knows how to use jumper cables but refused to learn how to drive standard shift. We owned a towing company at the time and she said that she knew I wound have her in a tow truck the first time I was short a driver. LOL !! ( she was right by the way. )
PS, we are now in our 70's and she still can't drive standard.

My DW, then just girl friend , was given a 64 Plymouth with standard 3SPD trans by her father , transmission was shot and while looking for a replacement , I taught her to drive standard on my 68 Coronet R/T , 426 , 4 SPD. That was fun .

+1. Lived in northern MN north of Duluth for 10 years. I can relate. DW and i took a couple ice fishing onetime. They were from a “warmer area” lets say. The lady cane up to me and told me she was cold. I told her “drill another hole”. Hopefully some here get it.

BTW, she did not appreciate my attempted humor and stomped off to their vehicle with her sneaker shoes covered in snow while we sat warm with our mukluks on.
