Man Kills Self Before Shooting Wife and Daughter
This one I caught in the SGV Tribune the other day and called the Editorial Room and asked who wrote this. It took two or three readings before the editor realized that what he was reading was impossible!!! They put in a correction the next day.

In days of old when editors were bold proofreading was invented
The errors caught were published naught and they said what they intended.

But those days are gone, cost cutting is strong and
the proofreaders on lay off.
So errors fly, right to your eye and at them
We can scoff.

It amazes me in the computer age with automatic spell check how there can be so many misspelled words in headlines.

Today's new headline word: familar

New York Times Corrects 26-Year Old Error

First Posted: 12/13/11 11:46 AM ET Updated: 12/13/11 11:46 AM ET

The New York Times corrected a 26-year old mistake on Tuesday.
In 1985, a reader wrote the paper a letter correcting its use of the phrase "hansom cabs" to describe the horse-drawn carriages in Central Park. Hansom cabs have just two wheels, whereas carriages have four. The Times published the letter, but continued to use "hansom cabs" incorrectly until Tuesday, when it issued a correction for the mistake in an article from last week.
This is not the first time the paper has issued a correction for an error made decades before. In 1969, the Times retracted a 1920 editorial that claimed space travel was impossible.

It isn't spell checking that's the major culprit, but the correctly spelled wrong word. A few years back it was reported that a local paper had won a "Pullet Surprise". There was a classified ad for "AKC registered Datsun puppies". I just goes on for ever. Many times, the words are correct in the article, but the headline writer gets it wrong.
