1880s town, South Dakota

Hi all, we will be traveling across South Dakota in late August and was wondering if the 1880s town is worth visiting. TIA

Depends, if you want to see what it was like to live 140 years ago. In my opinion, it's worth the visit. Apparently "Dances with Wolves" was filmed there

We optd not to last Spring, BUT, wed highly recommend the KOA across the street. As KOAs go, this is good one! Also, the Pioneer Auto Museum in Murdo, (23 miles east on I-90) was really really worth visiting!

By all means stop and stay for a few hours. We stopped there several years ago. The horse that Costner rode in "Dances with Wolves" was till alive and stabled there. Lot of props and memoranda from the movie also - like the double wagon that hauled him to the 'fort' abandoned by the cavalry.
The twelve sided barn is a museum with a tremendous amount of interesting things from the west of the 1800's. The construction details of the barn are not as apparent as I wish they had been. (I come from and engineering/construction family) They are, nonetheless, amazing. There have been yearly additions to the this 'town' since we were first there. Grass is growing now. It has the look of a real western and there are many great photo opportunities.
Having said all this - I am enthusiastic because I love the 'old west and it's history and lore.

In my opinion Wall Drug is not worth the stop. It reminded me of Solvang, CA. Go into a shop in Solvang and there a bunch of blue and white dishes, cups and plates for sale along with pastry. Go into the next shop and the same thing and on and on.
Wall drugs is just a string of small tourist "junk" shops although I will say they did have a restaurant that served pie and that was good.

LJowdy,
Agree about Wall Drug. After seeing bumper stickers for years, just had to stop by first time in the area. World's largest tourist trap...

I stopped a few years ago for their 5 cent coffee, and found out they had homemade pie. Best pie I had in years. Now we always stop for the food and the campground behind has all pull thru sites!
