Looking for more route advice

It looks like the best route so far is for us to stay in Canada until heading south to Glacier NP. I've included a Triptic image of the section.

I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on taking HWY 6 or 5/2/86 to head south on.

Triptic is sending me north on HWY 5 then south on 2 and rt86. But HWY 6 looks way shorter (I'm cautious when i see this. Is there a reason for this?

Thanks in advance.
Jim

Definitely routing you away from hwy 6. Using Google Maps there's a lot of tight turns from the 50,000' level, I'd be wary of that - not sure if that's from topography or what.

I didn't drill down to street view in Google Maps maybe the answer is there.

Also noticed an absence of towns on 6

My eyes aren't the greatest and looked at all this on my phone but it looks like 6 is not a US hwy so probably not as well maintained, maybe no shoulders, etc. Just my guess.

In the US, I would recommend nothing less than a US or State Hwy.

Might want to pickup a current paper Atlas of the US. I have one but it's in the rv in the driveway. I'll look later today

We are also going to Air Venture in Oshkosh. I haven't been since 2004. My Grandson is now a pilot as well, so he is excited to be going with us.
I visited SD recently. We stayed in Spearfish and found more to do than we had time! Reccomend Mount Rushmore, The Badlands was beautiful and well worth it, Would highly reccomend Devils Tower, The minute man museum is close to the badlands and is very interesting, and we had a great time visiting Deadwood. It was fun to follow the history of Wild Bill Hickok and his death in Deadwood.Visited the cemetery where he and Calamity Jane are buried.
They also had daily gun fight reenactments on the main street in Deadwood.
Elkhorn Ridge RV resort in Spearfish is one of the best parks we have stayed at.Attachment 389397Attachment 389398Attachment 389399Attachment 389400Attachment 389401Click image for larger version

Chrisdpairise . I never thought about using google street view. Excellent idea thanks.

I did find out that the border crossing is only open during the summer so that might be why it is directing me the other route.

Treetopguy, excelent info. I’m going to add them to the itinerary. I’m a little light on things and locations east of the badlands NP.

It’s been over ten years since I did Oshkosh and I’m looking forward to it. I just put in my notes this morning to find two junky bikes. Both of our present bikes are to good to lock up in the gate area. After osh. we’ll drop them off at a thrift store.

When you are there our unit is a Winnebago 29r. Stop buy and I’ll serve up some beer. It will have a Yamaha scooter on the back or maybe a white Jeep with a black top, 2dr JL. I haven’t decided if I want to tow the jeep or take the scooter for the convenience of getting around in Yellowstone and Glacier National Park.

Well,it’s done.

4000 miles of great fun. We had to change our plans because the second vehicle had to make a specialist dr appointment but it worked out fine. Sturgis, Mount Rushmore and the spam museum (don’t miss it) a couple swims in the yellow stone river, plus a couple great beer breweries in Dickinson (phat fish brewing) and Missoula (big sky brewing).

Oshkosh was a little smaller this year but still good. Maybe I’ll fly next year and leave the wife at home. Much cheaper taking the RV6A over the Winnebago RV.
