A nice state park in Delaware with bike trails and a lake

Getting colder in the tri state area, but we are still squeezing in a few more days of camping. Lum's Pond State Park is pretty close to Wilmington, Delaware, off 95. The park sites are huge, bathrooms are clean and there are some fun activities nearby. There is a small lake, perfect for kayaks. The walking trail is 6.5 miles around, not paved and several tree roots but a nice hike. And a few miles away is the Chesapeake Delaware canal, which has a paved bike path almost the entire length.
This park is worth putting on the list if you are headed south on I95 and need a break or just want a relaxing getaway with exercise options.

We also stayed at Cape Henlopen, sites are too small and tight IMHO. But we will probably try it again as it is right on the beach.

Thanks, TIME2CAMP, for posting good info yet again! First it was the tip on the Pine Creek Rail Trail, now this - which is great because we usually travel with both bikes and kayaks. Hmmm. Might have to make you our personal travel advisor.

We loved everything about Cape Henlopen with the exception of the unusual campsite setup. We had never been to a State Park where your rig was parallel parked on the roadway and your campsite opened directly onto your neighbors. That's the only reason we never returned. Is that common for Delaware State Parks?

Thanks much!

Mary

Check out the new design at Cape Henlopen. I think you’ll find it to be very nice as the sites are now back in or pull through.

That's excellent news - thank you for taking the time to share that! Looks like a return trip might be in order down the road.

Had to cancel this reservation this year because of Covid, but the reason why we wanted to book was because to the kayaking and bike trail around the pond.

So now it's back on the bucket list

Killens Pond SP is nice. Well treed radial loops all easy back ins. W&E.

A little further, in Denton, MD. Martinak SP has a paved bike trail & great kayaking on the Choptank river & Watts creek. All easy back in sites. 30a power. Big box stores 5-10 min away.

Thanks for sharing - I'll check out both places. Love it when a campground has easy access to both biking and kayaking opportunities.
