Adirondack Mountains

We are planning trip to upper state NY visiting the Adirondack Mounts. Looking for suggestions of camp ground on water front. i.e. Lake Champlain, Erie, Ontario or Rivers. Need some space in 42 ft. Tiffin Phaeton. Will be in the area about 3rd. week of august. thanks for your help.

If you're going to Lake Placid, there is a KOA northeast of there up towards White Face Mountain, about 10 miles away. They have pull-through sites which will fit your coach. Not on the water, but within walking distance of the Ausable river. It's a very nice park, full hookups.

I usually recommend the DEC parks in the Adirondack park, but most will not accomodate a 42' coach. Lots of water sites in these parks. No hookups.

We have spent some time here along the St Lawrence and been quite pleased: Merry Knoll Campground: Camping In The 1000 Islands - Clayton NY
Some sites are lined up along an open area, others are in a wooded area - I actually liked the open sites as you could see large ships on the Seaway

Two years ago we did a seasonal here. It's quiet, about 100 yards from Lake Champlain: Barber Homestead Park in Westport, New York Adirondack Camping at Its Finest We by choice did have a fairly small site, but our 35' 5er worked very well there:

One down fall with this CG is that the new bridge to Vermont isn't open yet, but there is a free ferry South of the CG and a $$ just North in Essex.

There are other CG's along the edges of the Adirondack Park, and even a few older CGs and several very nice, but dry type camping state parks but much new development has been curtailed by the Adirondack Park Agency and their excessively stringent green initiatives.

Having used the "free" ferry 4 times in our last Aug Vermont trip, It was run very efficiently. Never had to wait longer than 10 minutes.

Wilmington Notch SP. located at the base of Whiteface Mtn. ( about 10 miles from the city of Lake Placid) had some larger grassy sites. It was a short "downhill" hike to the Ausable River. As stated above they don't have electric service. Kind of your basic state park, nice view of Whiteface Mtn. OK showerhouse.

Thats to you all. Your suggestions are helping with plan. another question. Does anyone have experience with Apple Island Resort, a Vermont CG on South Hero Island? I understand this has ferry access etc. Thanks again

I know the request for Apple Island is an old one, but in case anyone else is interested, here's what I can tell you (disclaimer: I'm workamping there, working in the marina).......

Big rig friendly...back in and pull thru available
Nice people in the office doing reservations which seem in line with this style campground...we have paid a lot more for a lot less
General Store has fairly priced supplies and great sandwiches
Maintenance help available until after 8PM
South Hero is very small but has fuel, hardware store, and several places to eat
Burlington is less than 1/2 hour away...Stowe 55 miles
Laundry facilities not extensive (4 washers, 4 dryers) but cheap, clean and 24/7
Hot tub for adults, very nice heated swimming pool
Large, new recreation building. Adult oriented with large reading room and very nice workout facilities

The ferry someone asked about is about 20 minutes away, and costs less than $15 to take you across the lake to New York State

Very scenic area and the folks in stores, gas stations, etc. all seem very friendly
