Advice on where to Camp/Store near NW Chicago

Hello, I need some advice on where to camp in NW Chicago area or some suggestions on how to get our coach near the area. We have a 42' motorhome, towing a Jeep Liberty and are coming from Albuquerque. Have family that we'd like to visit in the Arlington Heights area. So far, I've checked into getting close and parking the coach at NW Chicago KOA and then driving over to stay with our family for 2-3 weeks. Another option would be a storage facility. Those are the only options so far. Any other options from the IRV2 community would be appreciated. Only other option is to buy a small Class C for these trips and we can park that in their driveway. Thanks in advance.

many Public Storage and other branded self-storage facilities have room for motorhomes. do a google search based on zip code and start making calls.

we store our MH at Kammes Auto & Truck in Bloomingdale IL. $120 p/m but call and see if they have a short term rate. 24-hr key card access, gravel, uncovered, no hookups.

Camp Rhineburg in the Cook County Forest Preserve would be much closer than the KOA, and a pleasant place to camp too if you would consider staying with your RV. But they have rules limiting you to 7 consecutive nights before having to spend one night out, and I think also 10 nights max per month. Full hookups. There is also a place on Route 12 in Lake Zurich that stores RVs outside with no hookups. On the northeast side of the road but I can't remember the name of the place. If you drove by you would see the RVs parked. Good luck and enjoy your visit. By all means eat at Mago in Arlington Heights. One of the best Mexican places we have ever eaten. We miss it so!

Thank you for your suggestions on this. I'll check out that storage option. It's defintely a real challenge in the Chicago area. I've also been thinking about the Paul Wolff campground. We've checked it out and it's very nice. Only drawback is we can only be there for 2 weeks and we can't make reservations. Buying a Class C seems like a good option too.

You would buy a small RV just for visiting and parking in the driveway?

You could leave the RV home and drive a vehicle to see them and stay in their home or in a nearby hotel or B&B.

What we have done with family is got a nice site with cabins on site and have family come to us. It made for a nice relaxing visit for all of us. The little ones had a tent and they loved it. They are in their 20's and still talk about the good times.

You could meet at an especially scenic area for touring or close to activities of your choice. We once met at Rocky Mtn. Nat'l Park other times as very scenic state parks.

If grandkids are involved you could give the parents some time off and take the kids for some fun.

The Class C is still a consideration during COVID19. We just took the trip out and returned in our car and it wasn't comfortable. 700 miles each day and tent camped at a KOA. I'd keep the Class A for retirement plans. Good idea on finding a campsite for about 3 weeks and shuttle back and forth with our toad or have them come out to the campsite on the weekends. Thanks for your input. Weird times like this, call for thinking outside the box. Any other suggestions on close campsites other than what was mentioned would be appreciated.

Try the RV park in Sycamore IL . It’s only 45 minutes from the Arlington Park area . Small town charm and great little town !

I have used Lehman’s Lakeside Resort a number of times. Not much of a lake. More like a pond. But the folks were nice.

Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort

Paul Wolff is my favorite in that area. Get there Monday thru Thursday and pick your spot.

Thanks everyone for your input on this. Now thinking about taking the motorhome and trying one of the campgrounds that you have recommended.
