Anyplace to stay at the Four Corners Monument

We're in Moab. Had great visits to Goosenexk State Park, Arches, Dead Horse State Park and Canyonlands. Awesome! Weather has been great. Winter is definitely a good time to do this trip if the weather allows. No one here.

Would like to visit the Four Corners Monument either late tomorrow afternoon (Friday) or Saturday morning. Then head to the Pertrified National Forest.

Can't see to locate any place to stay near the Monument. Anyone know a place we can spend the night. Can dry camp.

Thanks in advance. After seeing all the places we've visited in Arizona and Utah, God really did Bless America.

I don't think you will find any overnight parking at the monument. We visited it once and didn't see anything to indicate you can do that. This is a phone number that I found where you might be able to get an answer if you can stay overnight there. (928) 206-2540

We've never stayed in the immediate area. Canyon de Chelly is a couple hours away and is worth a day. As to the monument, prepare to be disappointed. It's run by the Reservation and cost something like $10 a head to get in. Not much other than concrete with the usual set of tables with southwest jewelry. Can't fault the Reservation from trying to make a buck though. I guess its a place to be able to say you a have been to, but leaving you will wonder what the big deal was. Depending upon whose account you read, it isn't really on the four corners either

Thanks for the quick replies. Rethinking whether we will go there as it adds a lot of miles and no place to stay makes timing a problem.

Your best bet may be to head down to Navajo National Monument in Tsegi. It is about 80 or 90 miles down the highway. It is a hidden gem of a park. I have never camped there before so cant speak to how great it is for that but it has a couple loops that are free and no hookups and will certainly be empty this time of year as long as you fit.

However since going to PF, Ship Rock has cg's as does Canyon De Chelly Of course you could back track a bit and hit the casino in Towac about 15 or 20 miles south of Cortez

Howdy!

We visited the Four Corners Monument last year while we stayed in Durango, CO. For us it was a day trip drive over and back. Like some have mentioned it want take long to see everything. We didn’t see any places to even boondock. We did pass a large Casino on the way that I would think you could use to boondock in overnight.

You can do Four Corners in 15 minutes. Then drive toward your next destination for a place to stop. You didn't mention what your route would be.

Here's an article and it states they stayed at a 'Harvest Host' site 7 mi. from the Monument, if you happen to be a member. It's certainly not in a harvesting area though. It's a gravel parking lot.

If you're staying in Cortez the night before you could just take a drive to Four Corners. As I recall Four Corners Monument isn't even in the correct place.

We stopped at 4 Corners this last summer as it was directly on our route between Monument Valley and Mancos, CO. It’s in the middle of nowhere, with no place to camp anywhere nearby afaik. For us, it was simply a “why not?” stop. Cant remember what the access fee was, but I’m thinking is was $15 or $20.

The RV “parking lot” surface was horrible to say the least, and not marked or controlled so it wasn’t particularly easy to maneuver.

You stand in line to get to see the marker and take a few pictures, and luckily the line was short for us. They have done a good job of creating a nice area around the marker including permanent booths for Native Americans to sell their wares.

It really wasn’t even worth the 30 minutes we spent or the access fee (except that I think it deservingly goes to the Native Americans). Nothing more than a quick “been there, done that” place on our list, and certainly not worth going out of your way IMHO.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

We decided to skip Four Corners. Made it to Canyon de Chelly and are staying at the Cottonwood Campgroun. Only ones here and perfect for our one night stay. No power but site is so level did not even put the jacks down.

On to Petrified Forest tomorrow before heading back east towards home.

Thanks for the picture, I wondered how it looked down there at this time of year.

We have visited in the winter a few times and had Dinner in the Lodge with the Locals - Great Food. Love Canyon de Chelly - one of the Great finds in the Southwest, especially if you take time to enjoy the locals.

Picture almost looks Black and White - Winter.

Will El Paso area be in your travels back East? - Map - https://binged.it/2HZ9Xgt - we enjoyed a great sunset here - Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site.

Sounds like a Great Trip.

Bus,

We didn't pull in until sunset so picture was taken without good lighting.

I'm so frustrated with a step problem (see the RV systems forum), I might walk over to the lodge and meet the locals. Need a break.

With the exception of no electric, this is a really nice layout. Nice paving job and clean grounds. Hard to beat $14. Since no one else is here, we can run the generator past the normal 8:30pm.

We will not be going via El Paso. Did that on the way out. Took the bypass which was much better than going through town on I10 (we did that last year). Hoping weather will allow us to take I40 east. At least to Little Rock when we will have to make the call whether we go through Memphis or duck south thru Atlanta back to Baltimore.

Thanks,

Chris

Petrified Forest: Get off I-40 at Holbrook and take 180 south to the 'Forest' Rd. Then it will take you back onto I-40 east. Most of the good stuff is near 180.
