Arkansas Must See / Do Places

I tried to piggy-back this in an old topic. It got no responses so I thougfht I would start a fresh one.

Quote:
We are planning a trip to Arkansas in October. Planning around a week reserved at Bull Shoals / White River State Park, but I have about another 7 - 10 days to fill. Interest are fly fishing, kayaking, mountain biking / hiking.

Buffalo River is one possibility? Hot Springs Beaver Lake? Any thoughts?

We have gone to all the Presidential Museums in the country. You might enjoy touring around Little Rock too.

Of the three trips I've taken to Arkansas:

First trip, I remember having to avoid box turtles to get to the privy out back of Great Grandma Cole's house.

Second trip, I remember bathing in a small stock tank out back of the barn with cold water drawn from the cistern at Grandma's house.

Third trip, Camping, swimming, hiking, biking at Lake Ouachita.

I'd recommend the latter as it seems more in line with your interests. It was a very nice place.

Our interests are completely different from yours. First part of our trip we stayed in North Little Rock, across the river from the Presidential library. We also visited Central HS and the NHP display. In addition we toured the old state house. I would like to go back because we ran out of time and did not get to tour Heifer International. From there we went down to Crater of Diamonds State Park and panned for diamonds, visited Hot Springs NP and a side trip to Hope before working our way to Texas. I hope to take I-40 and visit Ft. Smith next time through.

Consider Mount Nebo state park, maybe Petit Jean State park, maybe Hot Springs / Hot Springs national park, though this is not as outdoorsy as the others. There are hiking trails, etc, but considering the edge of the national park is the middle of a city street on bath house row, it is not much like other national parks.

p.s. I am not sure if I would want to take a large diesel pusher with a TOAD down Arkansas scenic highway 7, the section for about 50 miles north of Hot Springs is rather narrow, and has a few old narrow bridges left as of last summer. (replacement under way then)

A trip down the Buffalo River in Fall is gorgeous!! Good trout fishing, too.

I grew up in SW Arkansas. Lake Ouachita, Lake Greeson, Hot Springs. Petti Jean Mountain, lake Nimrod and Millwood Lake are all great memories. We floated the Cossatot River on a few times. Route 7 is a classic drive, best experienced on a motorcycle or in a car.

Please keep us updated. I didnít have an RV back then but we hope to revisit some day, so Iíll be interested in your experience.

In NW Arkansas is Crystal Bridges Museum built by the Walton Foundation. It's all free and a beautiful setting. They have the stodgy stuff but also imaginative art, all by American artists. You can also visit a small house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright that was moved there. The Wal Mart museum is also in Bentonville. Something different is the squirrel festival in Gravette, AR in early Sept. On Beaver Lake they have a professional fishing tournament every April.
Beaver Lake has 11 COE parks around it, some small, some big, some with sites on the lake. Horseshoe Bend has the most sites on the water, some with just elec, some with Elec & water. There's a HUGE craft festival every October around Rogers, AR. There's a battlefield in Pea Ridge. Further south, the Mount Magazine area is beautiful.

Try to attend some music events in Mountain Home, Arkansas. If you can find an impromptu jam session of the streets - better yet. They are such fun to watch! Many little Ozark towns have the jams. Hope you run across one.

OK, lots of great ideas so far. I will definitely check out Mountain Home.

Our emphasis is on fishing and kayaking. Here's our itinerary so far;

Caddo Lake SP (Texas)
Bull Shoals / White River SP
Buffalo Point - Buffalo National River
Dam Site River Campground - Beaver Lake / White River
